NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Congress
has asked John Cardinal
Krol of Philadelphia to re-
pudiate statements attrib-
uted to him during his tour
last month of Palestinian
refugee camps in Jordan
and Lebanon.
The Jewish organization's
call was echoed this week by
the Philadelphia Inquirer,
which urged the Catholic
prelate to "act promptly to_
correct" the impression that
he justified Palestinian
Arab terrorism.
In a report from Amman
in the Philadelphia Evening
Bulletin, Cardinal KrOl was
quoted as replying, "Well,
why not?" when asked if he

the delicate negotiations
leading to Mideast peace.
We do not believe the Cardi-
nal intended, by what he
said or didn't say, to justify
acts of terror which are
surely as repulsive to him as
to any civilized person. Yet
his comments could create
such an impression, and we
hope he will act promptly to
correct it."

Silverman Will Direct Bonds'
Annual High Holy Day Appeal

David Pollack, greater
metropolitan Detroit gen-
eral chairman of State of Is-

that Sidney Silverman will
be chairman of the High
Holiday Appeal to
strengthen Israel's economy
through the purchase of
State of Israel Bonds.
Silverman was the second
president of Cong. Beth
Achim, and has been active
in the Israel Bond campaign
since its inception. In 1972,
he became the first Detroit-
area recipient of the Israel
25th Anniversary Award
presented at a Beth Achim
Bond Tribute Dinner.
During the Silver Anni-
versary of the Israel Bond
campaign, more than 1,000
synagogues throughout the
United States and Canada
will participate in Israel

Hashana and Yom Kippur
