Care of Aged

.

Jewish Community Coun-
cil President Lewis S.
Grossman conveyed appre-
ciation to members of Mich-
igan's Congressional delega-
tion who gave their support
to a House resolution disap-
proving a multi-million dol-
lar sale of sophisticated
military weaponry to Jor-
dan.
The proposed sale, an-
nounced earlier in July by
f he Ford Administration,
ould have enabled Jordan
to obtain $350 million worth
of Hawk missiles and Vul-
can anti-aircraft batteries
from U. S. arsenals. How-
ever, in the face of over-
whelming congressional op-
position to the transaction,
the Administration an-
nounced on July 28 that it
would withdraw the pro-
posal for review and resub-
mittal after the August
Congressional recess.
Five Michigan representa-
tives were among the 88 who
co-sponsored the House res-
olution to disapprove the
sale, including Representa-
tives James J. Blanchard,
(D.-18th Dist.), William M.
Brodhead (D.-17th Dist.),
James G. O'Hara (D.-12th
,Dist.), Donald W. Riegle, Jr.
(D.-7th Dist.) and Robert J.
Traxler (D.-8th Dist.).

Meanwhile, in Washing-
' ton, D.C. the Jewish War
Veterans of U.S.A. urged
the Senate Foreign Rela-
tions Committee to reject
the "unwarranted, exorbi-
tant and dangerous" sale
of missiles to Jordon as a
"threat to American and
Middle East security."

Judge Paul Ribner, na-
tional JWV commander,
told the Senate committee
that JWV's opposition to
this proposed sale stems
from "our concern as Amer-
icans for the future security
of our nation."
"As those who have
fought to defend this secu-
rity," Judge Ribner noted,
"we believe that the threat
of Soviet acquisition of
these sophisticated Ameri-
can weapon system consti-
tutes a real and present
danger to the defense capa-

"The destruction of the
Middle East balance of
power which such a massive
introduction of sophisti-
cated weaponfy would incur
directly threatens the
United States by involve-
ment in which could be a
catastrophic next round of
Arab-Israel warfare."
