Questions and Answers Concerning Aliya

What kind of health ben-
efits can I get in Israel as
a newcomer?
Every new immigrant re-
ceives free health insurance
during his first six months
in Israel at any of the major
Sick Funds (Kupat Cholim).
The insurance covers medi-
cations, ambulatory treat-
ment and hospitalization.

Musical Entertainment

It does not include hospi-
talization for chronic ail-
ments contracted prior.to
his arrival in Israel or care
for illnesses contracted be-
fore becoming members of
the Sick Fund. Health in-
surance does not include
dental care, orthopedic
treatment. or eye-glasses.
By the end of the six
month period the immi-
grant should provide his
family and himself with full
medical insurance by pay-
ing monthly membership
dues. A certain discount in
dues is provided immigrants
during their first year in the
country.

My Hebrew is poor, how
will I learn?
All new immigrants have
the option of attending an
Ulpan, an intensive Hebrew
course. This course lasts five
months and is given six days
a week (Shabat off) for five
hours a day.

on tours and field trips as
well as other group activi-
ties to acquaint them with
life in Israel. Immigrants
may live in absorption cen-
ters during the Ulpan pe-
riod.
Special ulpanim - dealing
with the specific language
needs in certain professions
(science and math, educa-
tion. health and social serv-
ices, technical fields, etc.)
are also available.
It is, however, highly rec-
ommended to have some
basic knowledge of Hebrew
before getting to Israel so
that one can cope imme-
diately with some difficul-
ties a newcomer is sure to
encounter.

I hear that in order to
live comfortably, both hus-
band and wife have to
work. Is this true?
As is often the case in the
United States as well, in
order to lead a comfortable
life in Israel most wives will

-

go out to work, either full
time or part time. While a
family can manage the ne-
cessities of lie on one
person's income, an addi-
tional income will often sup-
plement the family with
many desired luxuries.
What kind of living ar-
rangements do I have
when I arrive in Israel?
All new immigrants stay
at temporary absorption
facilities when they first
arrive in Israel. Immigrants
can reside in an Absorption
Center for up to five months
while learning Hebrew or in
an immigrant hostel for up
to six months, while making
arrangements for more per-
manent housing.
Naturally, immigrants
may choose to live else-
where, and if so, may re-
ceive a subsidy in the form
of a loan from the Jewish
Agency. These loans are
converted into grants after
the recipient has been in the
country for three years.

Does going on aliya
mean a lowering of my
standard of living?
Coming from a country as
affluent as the United
States, one should, in most
cases, expect a relatively
lower standard of living in
Israel. Most apartments are
smaller, but Israelis make
use of their space more effi-
ciently.
Much of the socializing in
Israel takes the form of vis-
its to friends and family,
outings and short trips,
which do not require the
same spending as in the U.
S.

to reassess priorities and
"implementing previous
international commit-
ments."

Under the facade of this
phraseology lies the grow-
ing fear that Iran has al-
ready overextended itself,
according to the Daily
News. Government agencies
have been ordered to trim
expense accounts and freeze
hiring additional personnel,
with the exception of teach-
ers and medical staff.

Major industrial projects,

housing development, agri-
culture and the vast mili-
tary spending is not ex-
pected to be affected. The
military budget alone has
gone up a staggering 41 per-
cent in the past year.
Iran is pushing hard,
along with other Middle
Eastern producers, for a
stiff hike in oil prices in
September, when the cur-
rent freeze expires. But re-
gardless of how much the
price of crude goes up, the
belt-tightening is likely to
remain.

ing the three series shown above. At top are three
stamps honoring the Biblical judges of Israel, from left,
Gideon, Deborah and Jephthah. Below, left, is a postage
