When the Iraqi heir to
the throne once arranged a
great reception in his pal-
ace, he invited many sing-
ers and artists. For the
first time the doors of the
palace were opened to a
Jewish musician.

It was the time of the War
of Independence in Pales-
tine. Jews \vere . still re-
cruited in the Iraqi Army
but not to the front. They
were kept in camps. Jewish
students were not exempted
from military service. The
Iraqi secret service searched
for Zionists in the camps in
order to arrest them.
Once all camp inmates
were ordered to attend a
parade in the court. An
Iraqi general turned up, and
the inmates were panic-
stricken. -But to the surprise

Abraham Cohen is a mod-
est man. He learned to play
the zither as a child. His
father was not too happy
about his musical talents,
but his brother, who played
violin, gave him lessons
when the father was out of
the house.
Playing the zither is diffi-
cult, but Abraham learned
diligently. He participated
in radio auditions of chil-
dren and joined the music
academy in Baghdad. He
turned from folklore to
modern music. Artists, who
came to Iraq to give con-
certs, asked him to accom-
pany them with his zither.

"We drove to the Imper-
ial Court. I was told that
the Iraqi singer refused to
sing unless I was released
from arrest. I was very
touched.

"Everybody treated me
with respect. I could come
and go whenever I wished. I
received many offers to ap-
pear in concerts."
There was already a
strong anti-Jewish cam-
paign in Iraq. It was not
easy for a Jewish artist to
make a career.
Jews were concentrated
in certai-n quarters. The au-
thorities explained this was
necessary to defend the
Jews against attacks. There
was a curfew, and when
Abraham returned to the
quarters from the Court he
had to bribe Iraqi policemen
to let him in.

NEW YORK — A 2,-
500-year-old court case, and
others like it that were land-
marks of Jewish history,
may be "re-tried" across the
country if Reform congrega-
tions adopt a new idea for
synagogue programming
emanating from the Beth
David Reform Congregation
in Philadelphia.
There, Rabbi Henry
Cohen and a committee of
attorneys who are members
of the congreation have de-
vised "Jews on Trial," a se-
ries of post-Sabbath wor-
ship services and adult
education programs de-
signed to encourage in-
depth research in Jewish
studies and present the
drama and issues of man-
kind's struggle for justice.
An outline of how the idea
works, and sample court
cases that might be re-ex-
amined have been made

The format suggests
that congregations re-
hear, for example, the case
of the people of Judah ver-
sus Jeremiah, a 2,-
500-year-old milepost in
which the prophet was
acquitted of speaking an
oracle that had not been
commanded by God.

"THE CONTEMPORARY LOOK"

"Once I was brought
home by a court-car,"
Abraham told us. "The
Imperial flag was on the
car, and from that night on
no Iraqi policemen dared
approach my house."

Of the case of the Roman
Empire vs. Jesus. Or the
Dreyfus case of czarist Rus-
sia vs. Mendel Beiliss, who
was accused of murdering a
Christian child for ritual
purposes, or such contempo-
rary cases as those of Leo
Frank, Marco DeFunis and
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
The suggested procedure
is to form a committee of at-
torneys from the congrega-
tion who would examine
with their rabbi a number
of significant legal cases
involving Jews and justice.
"Program Perspectives,"
a periodic publication on
congregational program-
ming of the UAHC, provides
not only seven examples,
but backgrounds, accounts
of the trials, suggested pro-
cedures, discussion themes
and bibliographies.

on the Israeli Radio. He
travelled with the "Inbal"

and composed many orien-
tal songs which became pop-

Abraham is still afraid to
tell much about his miracu-
lous career in Iraq, as many
important personalities in
Iraq helped him. He lives in
Jerusalem with his family
and hopes that peace will
come and he again can ap-
pear before an Iraqi audi-
ence in Baghdad.

Abraham said. "My hands

eral pressed my hand and
ordered me to change my
clothes. Ten minutes later I
was sitting in a luxurious
car besides a famous Iraqi
singer, who asked me to. ac-
