Temple Women's Art Calendar
Features Woodcuts, Lithographs

NEW YORK — Attrac-
tive reproductions in color
of woodcuts and lithographs
by Esther Glueck Shaprio il-
lustrate the art calendar is-
sued by the National Feder-
ation of Temple Sisterhoods
for the year 5736 which will
begin at sundown on Sept. 5.
Mrs. Shapiro, the widow
of Herman T. Shapiro, an
architect in Cincinnati, is
assistant professor of print-
making at Edgecliff College
in that city and a sister of
the late Dr. Nelson Glueck,
world famous archeologist,
rabbi and president of the
Hebrew Union College-Jew-
ish Institute of Religion.
Among the illustrations
in the art calendar is a
woodcut entitled "Worship"
in which the wood knot that
had already existed in the
plank evoked the shape of
4-1 -9
. Eternal Light, the Ner

Starting with this, the
artist created a visual
counterpart to the biblical
passage from Isaiah 56:7,
"My house shall be called
a house of prayer for all
peoples."
Another of the graphics is
entitled "Awaiting Their
Return", showing two
women, one of them with an
infant in her arms, and a
background of fishing boats,
based on the quotation,
"They that go down to the
sea in ships" from Psalms
107:23.
Mrs. Shapiro's graphics
are included in the perma-
nent collections of numer-
ous museums, and her

prints were part of the 14th
National Print Exhibition
sponsored by the Library of
Congress. She has given
demonstrations of print-
making as part of educa-
tional programming for
station WCET-TV in Cincin-
nati and has conducted
workshops on printmaking
at art festivals and in sev-
eral public schools.
The NFTS art calendar
contains the dates of secu-
lar and Jewish holidays; a
Hebrew calendar; weekly
Bible readings; and two
poems by Mrs. David M.
Levitt of Great Neck,
N.Y., immediate past
president of NFTS, ex-
cerpted from Mrs. Levitt's
presentation "The Scat-
tering and Gathering of
Light" at the 1974 Ecu-
menical Assembly of
Church Women United.
The Art Calendar also has
space for recording daily en-
gagements. It can be pur-
chased for $1.75 plus pos-
tage from the National
Federation of Temple Sis-
terhoods, 838 Fifth Avenue,
New York, N.Y. 10021.

God is a quest, a vision,
and a goal. He who travels
the path of molecules and
electrons, of protons and
atoms toward a vision of the
ultimate may miss it en-
tirely; he who travels the
road of spiritual values, of
goodness, beauty, truth, and
love, will surely find Him on
the way.
— Irving Frederick Reichert
