Later amulets were in- scribed with quotations re- levant to their specific pur- pose. The text of the Priestly Blessing (Num. 6:24-26) was considered ef- fective against the "evil eye." Permutations and combinations of the letters of the different names of God were frequently used; names of angels were also very common. The simplest amulet had an inscription of the name of God on a piece of parch- ment or metal, usually made of silver. The efficacy of the amulet depended not only on the inscription but also on the person Nvho wrote it; the more pious the author the more effective was the amulet. Earlier magical tradi- tions, including the use of amulets, magic charms, names of angels, combina- tions of Hebrew letters, and so on subsequenly merged with the Kabbala and came IIRIP • /#4 4 4.11%S . c1 Two Ways tolle,' 1, The Good Life The Atrium . .. continental dining— complete dinners including the Chef's special fondue. FAMOUS FISH & CHIPS From earliest times, man has tried to protect himself from misfortune by the use of objects which he consid- ered holy or otherwise po- tent. One of the ways of doing this, says Encyclopaedia Judaica, was to keep the object close to his person, frequently wearing it as an article of clothing, or as an ornament. It was felt that the evil spirits which cause misfortune would not dare to attack one so protected. • The custom developed for people to have on their per- sons pieces of paper, parch- ment, or metal discs in- scribed with various formulae which would pro- tect the bearer from sick- ness, the "evil eye," and other troubles. The use of inscription as a means to ward off evil spirits stemmed from a belief in early times in the holiness in the power of words. Such artifacts, reports the Ju- daica, are known as amu- lets. Amulets are frequently mentioned in talmudic lit- erature. The term used indicates something that is bound.or hung on the per- son. The Talmud mentions two sorts of amulets: a written one, and one made from .roots of a certain plant. The written one in- scribed with one or more quotations was a parch- ment from a variety of sources, including the Scriptures.
