Sokolow biography provides
an opportunity for the re-
viewer's personal recollec-
tions about the noted leader
and his daughter. They were
here twice, together, of
course, since Celina had ac-
companied him at all times
as his medical protector.
The reviewer was president
of the Zionist Organization
of Detroit when Dr. Soko-
low came here in 1929 to ad-
dress the convention of the
Zionist Organization of
America in Detroit. He was
then the chairman of the
World Zionist Executive and
his message, in the crucial
year of a rising Arab vio-
lence in Palestine, drew the
attention of world Jewry to
the sessions in Detroit.
the executive director of the
Zionist District of Detroit
and he was the guide here of
Dr. Nahum and Dr. Celina
Sokolow. This reviewer
joined them at several func-
tions, at the luncheons and
dinners at the Old Josef's
Restaurant on Woodward
and Montcalm. Of interest
at that time was the de-
scription of Dr. Sokolow in
the British term — politi-
cian. Since he had already
made his home then in Lon-
don — as a politician, this
reviewer's feature article
about him succumbed to the
use of that term. The criti-
cism of it was not the Soko-
lows' — they had already
been reared in it. But subse-
quent references to Sokolow
was as diplomat, statesman,
historian, authoritative in-
terpreter of Jewish experi-
ences and values and as a
major participant in the in-
ternational meetings and
peace conferences at Ver-
sailles and San Remo.
The notable characteris-
tics of the great man are
retained in the impressive
Florian Sokolow book. It
serves well in assuring that
the memory of the great
Zionist leader will live iner-
asably in recorded 20th Cen-
tury Jewish history.

The late Dr. A. M.
Hershman was at the time
the most revered Zionist
leader in Michigan, and
his address at the opening
session of that convention
preceded Dr. Sokolow's.
Dr. Sokolow had already
established lasting friend-
ships in Detroit during an
earlier visit in Detroit in
1922. He was here for nearly
a week and his address to
the Zionists of this commu-
nity at that time was at a
dinner in the basement so-
cial hall of Shaarey Zedek
on Willis and Brush. The
late Jacob Miller was then
Romania Seeking
Israel Flood Aid
JERUSALEM (JTA)
Romania has asked Israel
for extensive aid to help re-
pair damage caused by re-
cent floods in that country,
the government disclosed.
The Romanian Charge
d'Affaires, Gheorge Roata,
met with Commerce and
Industry Minister Haim
Barley to convey his govern-
ment's request for phos-
phates, seeds, animal feed,
irrigation piping and electri-
cal equipment. He also
asked for long-term credit
facilities, apparently to help
cover the cost of the re-
quested aid.
Barley, who visited Ro-
mania last year, expressed
his profound sympathy for
the, Romanian flood victims
and said he would pass on
the aid request to the gov-
ernment for consideration.
Romania is the only com-
munist bloc country that
maintains formal diplo-
matic ties and trade rela-
tions with Israel.
