Dictionary Definition Attacked
Editor, The Jewish News:
I have written to the 42
Jewish Members of the Bri-
tish Parliament to ask
whether any of them would
be prepared to introduce a
Private Member's Bill that
would prohibit the unjusti-
fiable and maligning defini-
tions of the words "Jew"
and "Welsh" in many En-
glish dictionaries.
I recently issued a writ
agains tthe Clarendon
Press, publishers of the
range of Oxford Dictionar-
ies, with the intention of
removing definitions of a
Jew as an "unscrupulous
usurer," "cheat," "extor-
tionate tradesman," "deals
craftily," and other similar
vicious descriptions of
"Jew."
I failed in my High
Court action because, ac-
cording to the judge, fresh
legislation would be
needed to render such defi-
nitions illegal.
Since the case, there have
been protests about deroga-
tory definitions of "Welsh,"
protests that were renewed
when trade unionists were
accused in Parliament of
"Welshing" or reneging on
the social contract.
If any MP agreed to spon-
sor a private bill it might
gain more support if it were
also to declare illegal derog-
atory and defamatory de-
scriptions of other national
groups besides Jews.

Challenge Arab Propaganda
Editor, The Jewish News:
I completely share the
concern for anti-Israel prop-
aganda in public media, as
discussed in your Commen-
tary, and have reason to be-
lieve that it has become a
very effective Arab weapon,
primarily because it is re-
maining largely unchal-
lenged.
But, as we Jews have
ample reasons to know, peo-
ple believe what is conven-
ient and seldom concern
themselves with the often
difficult task of searching
for truth. Therefore, it is a
very dangerous ostrich-like
folly to ignore anti-Israel
propaganda or lightly disre-
gard it as such.
It is not only a primary
Jewish responsiblility to
counteract these falsehoods
publicly and in a manner
each uncommitted person
can understand and accept
on his own terms. However,
only we Jews have a pri-
mary and vested interest in
such efforts, and it would be
more than naive to believe
that others would take up
the battle for us.
As I see it, it is the pri-
mary responsibility of our
Jewish organizations to
not only provide the effec-
tive leadership for coun-
teracting anti-Israel ac-
tions whatever their
nature, but also to carry
out this leadership with
self-initiated actions.
By this is not meant the
conduct of dialogues with
other Jews and generally
sympathetic others but the
open discussion with all peo-
ple wherever they meet,
whoever they are, in terms
they can readily compre-
hend and identify with
FRANK L. THEYLEG
According to chapter
president Ronald Schwarz-
berg, more than 50 of the 60
members of the Kochav
youth group at Cong. Bnai
David have left the chapter
and joined Young Israel
Teens in a dispute with the
synagogue.
The youth wanted to re-
tain separate seating (meh-
itza) at youth services, but
were overruled in a two-
year fight with the syn-
agogue board, according to
Schwarzberg. Bnai David
does not have separate seat-
ing in its main sanctuary.
In June, the chapter was
named superior chapter of
435 National Conference of
Synagogue Youth chapters,
and cited for Torah study,
chapter programming and
leadership development.
