AJCongress Asks
Federal Gun Ban
WASHINGTON, — The
American Jewish Congress
called for a federal gun con-
trol law banning "the manu-
facture, importation, sale
and ownership of all types
of handguns and handgun
ammunition" except for law
enforcement officers.
In a statement submitted
to the subcommittee on
crime of the House Judi-
ciary Committee, the Jew-
ish organization supported
the virtually complete ban
on handguns contained in
companion bills introduced
by Sen. Phillip A. Hart of
Michigan and Rep. Jona-
than Bingham of New York.
It rejected as "too lim-
ited" a measure requiring
handgun registration and
licensing introduced by
Sens. Edward M. Kennedy
of Massachusetts and Adlai
E. Stevenson of Illinois, as
well as a proposal by Attor-
ney General Edward H. Levi
that would restrict the pro-
hibition of handguns and
ammunition to high crime
areas.
In its statement —
signed by Paul Berger of
Washington, D.C., co-
chairman, and Joseph B.
Robison of New York, di-
rector, of the organiza-
tion's commission on law,
social action and urban
affairs — the American
Jewish Congress said the
country's "appallingly
high rate of violent death
and injury caused by fire-
arms" was such that the
problem could not be dealt
with by state laws.
"We therefore believe that
the most effective form of
gun control legislation
would be a federal law pro-
hibiting the manufacture,
importation, sale and own-
ership of all types of hand-
guns and handgun ammuni-
tion, with an exception for
law enforcement officials,"
the statement declared.

A Message From The Lubavitcher Rebbe:
To what can be attributed the low spiritual level of our people, as
seen by the lack of observance of Torah and Mitzvos, in this period
just preceding the coming of Moshiach? This is a question which is
frequently discussed.
This, say our Torah scholars, is in a large measure, due to the laxity
in the observance of the laws of Kashrus, both in the home and out-
side. It is recognized by science that "One is what he eats." This
applies not only to the physical body, but also to the make-up of the
entire personality and character.
Obviously, the meticulous observance of this Mitzva is of the ut-
most importance.
A fund has been established to help defray the costs of anyone,
throughout the entire world, who will change to a Kosher kitchen —
Kasher the stove and other utensils, purchase two new. sets of dishes
and whatever else is necessary. Half of all these expenses will be
reimbursed from the special Kashrus Fund upon recipt of a letter from
the local Rabbi certifying that the kitchen has been Koshered and
stating the amount of expenses incurred. This will, of course, be kept
in utmost confidentiality.
