reports on his tour of the
Middle East.
Writing from Cairo on
"The Difference Between
Allies and Interests," Safire
stated:
America is an ally of Is-
rael. "Ally" is a subjective,
emotional word scorned by
diplomats who see national
attachments as temporary,
dictated by economic or geo-
political interest.
But to be an ally is nei-
ther a sometime nor a war-
time thing; it is a valuable
and sometimes mystic con-
nection between peoples.

Why is America an ally
of Israel? A visit there
tells the story: It is a de-
mocracy, with•an active
opposition and a free
press, and that spark is
one we should breathe on
wherever it appears.

Although the kibutz life
gets the publicity, the small,
private-property co-op
makes the money and is
growing faster, showing
that Israel's economy is
powered by — of all things
— what we have come to call
the Protestant ethic.

tion in the United States of
the Jews' right to a home-
land after World War II; our
admiration for their willing-
ness to fight for their inde-
pendence; and, surely, the
attachment of many U. S.
Jews to the Zionist dream —
all this goes toward making
a relationship what Win-
ston Churchill would call
"special."
The diplomat who derides
the introduction of such
sentiment into any foreign
intercourse — who calls it
"unrealistic" — is himself
out of touch with political
reality in modern democra-
cies.

Public opinion counts,
and it is not always deter-
mined by the neat patterns
of immediate self-interest.
Cultural affinity, tradi-
tion, admiration for pluck-
iness, common ways for
doing politics and busi-
ness, the expectation of
returned loyalty—all this
goes into the intangible
making of an ally.

AN HISTORIC EVENT

Marking the 20th Anniversary of

BAR - ILAN it
UNIVERSITY

at the

Annual Dinner of the Detroit
Friends of Bar-Ilan U.

THURSDAY EVENING, SEPT. 18th

6 P.M. Shaarey Zedek Social Hall

Our diplomats err in
trying to befriend an Egypt
by defriending an Israel.
There are other, more com-
plex ways to express our in-
terest in Egypt than to join
her in condemnation of our
ally.
We can act as honest
brokers without trying to
deceive one side by pretend-
ing that we do not know and
are not allied to the other
side: We might even pick up
a point for candor.
"Blessed are the peace-
makers," goes the sermon
on the Mount. A less famil-
iar portion goes, "Blessed
are they which are perse-
cuted for righteousness'
sake, for theirs is the king-
dom of heaven."
Israelis have a right to
their kingdom with secure
, borders now, here on earth,
and America as peacemaker
ought not to be in the least
embarrassed to be known as
a reliable ally in that cause.
