Heater Blast Takes 2nd Life
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The explosion of a defective
water heater in a suburban,
Jerusalem apartment house
Sunday claimed a second
life.
Yoram Zakri, one of six
children and two adults bur-
ied under an avalanche of
debris, succumbed to his
wounds in a hospital. One
of his companions, Naftali
Peretz, 9, was killed in-
stantly by the blast. The
youngsters were playing in
a lot adjacent to the eight
story building when the ex-
plosion blew out the walls,
destroying three apart-
ments.
Engineers said that the
entire structure in the Kir-
yat Hayovel suburb was in
danger of collapse and pre-
cautionary measures were
being taken.
Meahwhile, Jerusalem's
Mayor Teddy Kollek ac-
cused the broadcasting au-
thority of reacting hastily
with unfounded, sensational
news bulletins that did con-
siderable harm to public
morale. He said that after
the first news bulletin, ten-
sion rose in the Musrara
quarter of Jerusalem bor-
dering the Arab quarter of
the Old 'City.
Initially the blast was
attributed to terrorist sab-
otage, and the PLO
claimed responsibility.
But police investigators
announced an hour later
that it was caused by a
defective water heater in
which excessive gas pres-
sure had built up. The ex-
plosion destroyed the
apartment in which the
heater was located and the
flats directly above and
below it in the three story
building. Other young-
sters playing on the lot
stopped passing cars
which took the injured to
the hospitals.

—The Talmud
gion were on the scene,
quickly along with ambul-
ances and fire-fighting
equipment. They were
joined by Jerusalem Mayor
Kollek as police bulldozers
sifted the wreckage for ad-
ditional bodies, but none
were found.
Kollek promised the occu-
pants of the destroyed flats
1.11(1 neighbors whose flats
also suffered damage that
the city would pay for re-
pairs. The residents made
homeless by the blast will
be housed at the city's ex-
pense until it is decided
whether to rebuild their
flats.
