Practice of Euthanasia
lievra Kadisha'
The term "Hevra Kadi-
sha," which means "Holy
Society," is applied to the
organization in the commu-
nity which takes care of
purifying and preparing the
dead for burial. Some of
these organizations take up
their positions when the in-
dividual is dying. From that
point on he is never left
alone.
A member or members of
the society are always with
him, saying the final confes-
sional with him before he
dies, standing guard over
him u ntil he is buried,
washing him after death,
dressing him in shrouds,
etc. . . . and then digging
the grave and finally lower-
ing him into his grave and
then filling the grave with
earth.

Actually, the expression
"Hevra Kadisha" was origi-
nally applied to the whole
Jewish community. Later
on it was used as a prefix to
whatever Jewish organiza-
tion or group was organized,
whether for study, prayer
or anything else in the Jew-
ish community.
GENEVA — Thirty-one
immigrants from Russia
and Romania completed
course requirements and
graduated in the first train-
ing course for food inspec-
tors offered by ORT Israel.
Besides the technical
training, students were
given intensive training in
technical Hebrew and a se-
ries of field trips were ar-
ranged to acquaint - them
with Israel food technology.

general statement of the
Mishnah (Semachoth 1:1) is
that a person who is in a
dying condition is regarded
as being a live person in all
respects.
The Talmud (tractate
Shabbat 151b) states that
one who even closes the eyes
of such a person is com-
pared to one who commits
murder.
Some claim that the prac-
tice of euthanasia usurps
the priority which is God's,
that is, the decision of life
and death, based upon the
Biblical phrase: "I kill and
make alive" (Deuteronomy
32:39).
