BONN — In a deeply moving scene Wednesday, Israeli Premier Yitzhak Rabin is shown chanting Kaddish at
Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during his visit to West Germany. Rabin's German-born wife, Leah, stood be-
hind him fighting back tears as Rabin laid a wreath at the monument. Staring at the grassy mounds that cover mass
graves, Rabin quietly told an aide, "It is all so green here now. It is hard to believe what went on in this place."
On his arrival at the Hanover airport Rabin said, "Bergen-Belsen belongs to the past. It is a past we can never
forget, but I and all Israelis look forward to a more hopeful and better future."

Romanian Episcopate Backs Trifa

The Romanian Orthodox
Episcopate of America,
meeting in annual conven-
tion at Grass Lake, Mich.,
over the July 4 week-end,
adopted a strong resolution
backing Archbishop Valer-
ian D. Trifa and pledging to
aid in his defense against
the U. S. Department of
Justice in the move to have
him deported as a partici-
pant in Nazi crimes and the
murder of Jews in Romania

during the Hitler regime.

The convention's resolu-
tion stated that the Arch-
bishop "has been subjected
to continuous attacks on his
reputation in order to dis-
rupt his leadership," and
that "these continued at-
tacks have culminated in a
judicial proceeding intended
to smear and destroy his

HAL GORDON

reputation, which interferes
with the peace and religious
freedom of the members of
the Episcopate."

The convention unani-
mously reaffirmed "its trust
in and allegiance" to Trifa,
pledged its support in his
defense, and sent a copy of
the resolution to President
Gerald Ford.

Humility Defined

By LEO BAECK
"The Essence of Judaism"

The essential meaning of
humility, as it grew up in
the Jewish soul, is the
knowledge of the position
which man has in infinity
and eternity; it is the full re-
ligious feeling of life in the
man who knows that he has
been created by God.
Thus there is in it nothing
deliberate or intentional,
nothing which crushes or
oppresses; it is no self-humi-
liation, but it is insight into
man's own existence, the
realization that it has come
into being through God. It is
the mood which pervades
life when it becomes con-
scious of its profoundness,
when it listens within to it-
self; it is the sound in which
the harmony of the great
creation — the music of the
spheres one is inclined to
say — rises up in the human
soul.

Who knows most says
least.
