Cuban Jewish Community Has Religious Freedom

Cuba's Jewish population
of 'approximately 1,700 — a
tenth its size before Fidel
Castro took power 16 years
ago — has full "religious
freedom" but the lone Jew-
ish elementary school on the
island has only 37 pupils
with a Hebrew speaking
non-Jew as their teacher.
These pupils, like vir-
tually all Cuban school-age
youngsters belong to the
blue-uniformed Pioneers to
whom the principles of the
Cuban Revolution are
taught.
Cuba's Jews, about 1,500
of them living in Havana,
have five synagogues that
existed before the Castro
revolution. They include
Orthodox, Reform, Conserv-
ative and Sephardic congre-
gations. There is no rabbi.
An American rabbi who had
been there left.

However, two kosher
butcher shops function
and kosher meals are
served in a synagogue.
Passover supplies come
from Canadian Jewish or-
ganizations. Cuban Jews
experience no difficulty in

In pre-Castro's Cuba, the
Jews were mainly in the
professions and commerce
and industry. Those there
now are mainly profession-
als and, like most other
Cubans, are government
employes.
Those remaining may be
divided into three principal
groups: those ideologically-
oriented to the Castro phi-
losophy including some in
prominent governmental
posts; those who felt they
could continue a decent ex-
istence by working and
drawing on their savings:
and the older people who
had been refugees from
Central Europe and do not
wish to start life in another
country for the third time.
Like other Communist
and Third World countries,
Cuba broke relations with
Israel. Castro has referred
to Israel as the "aggressor
state" and newspapers re-
port "Zionist troops" in Le-
banon. PLO chief Yasir Ar-
afat was a war-mly

of the Vietnam refugees in
the United States.
Maybe the idea would be
good for American unem-
ployed.
There are people who do
not care for the kibutz style
of life. They like urban life.
Besides, there is the fresh
air of the kibutz. A lot of
people are not used to it.

would like it. There are
many advantages. For in-
stance, if you have mili-
tary ambitions, why go to
West Point? A kibutz
training is just as good.
