JERUSALEM (JTA) -
Michael Jacob Hazani, Is-
rael's Welfare Minister and
a leader of the National Re-
ligious Party, died Wednes-
day at age 62.
Mr. Hazani was the first
NRP Minister to resign
from the Cabinet of former
Premier Golda Meir in 1974
in the controversy over the
"Who Is a Jew?" issue. How-
ever, when the NRP joined
the coalition government of
Premier Yitzhak Rabin last
year, he accepted the Wel-
fare Ministry Portfolio
which had been left vacant.
Mr. Hazani was born in
Bendzin, Poland, where he
'ended high school and
rabbinical seminary. He
settled in Palestine in 1932
and became active in the
Hapoel Hamizrachi move-
ment.

Oscal M. Zemon

Oscar M. Zemon, active in
the real estate field for
many years, died June 29 at
age 68.
A resident of Charlevoix,
Mr. Zemon assisted his wife
for several years in efforts
for Brandeis University. He
was an avid tennis player,
having won the Detroit City
junior and senior tennis
championships in a single
year. He is a Michigan sin-
gles tennis champion and

Louis Gottschalk,
Historian, Author

NEW YORK (JTA) -
Louis Gottschalk, the histo-
rian and authority on the
French Revolution, who led
the Bnai Brith Hillel Foun-
dations during the turbu-
lent 1960s-period of Jewish
student involvement in the
civil rights and social justice
movements, died June 24 in
Chicago. He was 76.
Dr. Gottschalk, xvho was
born in Brooklyn, taught at
the University of Chicago
from 1925 until his retire-
ment in 1964. He was chair-
man of the history depart-
ment from 1925-1952. He
was made a Chevalier in the
Legion of Honor by the
French government in 1953.
Dr. Gottschalk served for
six years as chairman of
Hillel's governing commis-
sion after his appointment
in 1963. Before that he had
been faculty adviser to the
Hillel Foundation at the
University of Chicago and
was a member of the gov-
erning commission since
1959.
