Minyan a Must
for Weddings

Jewish tradition requires
a quorum of a minyan to be
present at a Nv edding cere-
mony.
Generally speaking, this
indicates that marriage is
not strictly a private affair.
Not only the rights of the
bride and bridegroom are
involved in the marriage,
the rights of other members
of the community are in-
volved since the bride is
henceforth forbidden to
marry anyone else.
Furthermore, were secret
marriages, as such, allowed,
it would he possible to en-
gage in short-term mar-
riates (e.g., a marriage for a
day) which would resemble
prostitution instead of an
affair of love and devotion.
In this latter sense, the
requirement of a minyan is
only one of a number of for-
malities required in effect-
ing a marriage bond, all of
which tend to point out that
the coming association be-
tween husband and wife
will he more than a loose ex-
pression of animal lust. The
formalities give the mar-
riage deep and lasting hu-
man meaning.

UJA Official
Dies in Crash

NEW YORK, (JTA) —
Saul Horowitz, Jr., a leader
in the United Jewish Appeal

— Federation of Jewish Phi-
lanthropies joint fund-rais-
ing campaign here died last
week in the crash of an
Eastern Airlines 727 jet as
it approached Kennedy Air-
port.

Horowitz, 50, a builder,
was chairman of the board
of HRH Construction Co., a
trustee of the federation
and vice chairman of the
real estate division of the
UJA-Federation Joint Cam-
paign.

His father, Saul Horow-
itz, is also active in the fed-
eration and other Jewish
organizations.
