Woody Allen has Holly- wood in stitches with his latest picture, "Love and Death," a spoof patterned after "War and Peace." It is irreverently sacreli- gious, often profound but never profane. At first, we find Woody- alias-Boris in a Russian Detroiter Wins Tennis Tourney 869-3988 1 NOW OPEN prison of 1812, condemned to death by the French in- vaders for his attempted assassination of Napoelon — momentarily awaiting his execution — in itself not an hilarious situation, though developed by the Chaplinesque clown as the wackiest comedy he has ever cooked up for our pleasure. Staccato flashbacks in- volve Boris with a kooky girl (portrayed by Diane Keaton of "The Godfather"). He is flirting with a voluptuous Spanish countess and forced to a duel by a foppish of- ficer, the latter a brilliant characterization by Harold Gould. Exteriors were shot in Hungary and the battle scenes seem to involve thou- sands of people in combat. "Love and Death" is a richly mounted picture, well di- rected and enacted by Woody Allen and his com- pany of French, Russian, Spanish, Hungarian, Bri- tish and American perform- ers.
