BONN (JTA) — The Ber-
lin Senate has pardoned two
Nazi criminals serving life
sentences.
They are 62-year-old Otto
Locke, who was responsible
for the deaths of seven Jew-
ish inmates of Birkenau
concentration camp, and
Gottfried Matthes, who, as
medical officer in charge of
the health office of the Pol-
ish town of Grottkau, was to
blame for killing Germans
suffering from mental ill-
ness.
Locke and Matthes have
served 20 and 21 years of
their sentence's, respec-
tively, and are no longer fit
to be held in custody, for, in
the view of leading criminol-
ogists, prison inmates un-
dergo a personality decline
between the 15th and 20th
year of imprisonment. For
this reason the Berlin Sen-
ate is applying the unwrit-
ten law of not continuing
sentences beyond the 20th
year.

Rabbi Condemns
`Loose Conversions'

NEW YORK (ZINS) —
Rabbi Moshe Steinberg,
head of the beth din of the
Rabbinical Assembly, told
his colleagues at a recent
meeting here that they
must be on guard against
loose conversion practices.
According to Rabbi Stein-
berg, there are no less than
200,000 bastards in this
country who, according to
Jewish law, may not marry
with Jews.
He blamed this "epi-
demic" on what he called
the chaos and loose stand-
ards which prevail in the
United States in general,
which - he said included the
conduct of rabbis in the Re-
form and Conservative
movements who fail to heed
the strict dictates of Jewish
law.

Torah Umesorah
Cites Young Poets

NEW YORK—A month-
long search for budding
poets and creative talents
among Hebrew day school
students reached its conclu-
sion recently with the, an-
nouncement of nine prize
winners from grades three
.through eight among the

90,000 Hebrew day school
students in North America.
The poetry search contest
which was sponsored by
Torah Umesorah, the Na-
tional Society for Hebrew
Day Schools, attempted to
motivate Hebrew day school
children to write poetry as
well as to use their imagina-
tion in expressing creatively
their world view as nlem-
hers of the Hebrew day
school family.
