is open to the public as a lo-
cal Jewish museum and the
center of the Jewish Histori-
cal Society of Greater
Washington.
Officially it will he known
as the Lillian and Albert
Small Jewish Museum of
Washington. It is the second
synagogue in America des-
ignated for inclusion in the
national register of historic
places as a "landmark." The
first is the famous Touro
Synagogue in Newport,
Rhode Island.
Adas Israel is a simple,
two-story red brick building
in colonial style situated
close to the nation's Capitol
in the old downtown section
in northwest Washington.
Originally it stood three
blocks away. About to be
torn down to make way for
the subway system under
construction, it,was saved in
the nick of time and moved
three blocks in December
1969 at the request of the
Jewish Historical Society

ment agencies whose coop-
eration was required.

The old synagogue is the
first building for Jewish
worship built in Washing-
ton. It was erected in 1873
by 35 families which had
separated four years pre-
viously from the Washing-
ton Hebrew Congregation
over certain liturgical re-
forms. The present Adas
Israel Synagogue, which
is in its third edifice, is
Washington's largest Con-
servative congregation.
The Washington Hebrew
Congregation is the area's
largest Reform group.
Prior to its construction,
the two congregations had
been meeting in rented
quarters or private homes.
In 1907 the Adas Israel
Congregation moved to a
larger structure in the
downtown area and the
original building became
successively a Greek Or-
thodox Church and an
Evangelical Church of
God. Ultimately, the
building was turned into a
warehouse with a carry-
out sandwich shop.
In 1968 it was found to
be in the way of the new
metro subway system and
literally at the last possi-
ble moment for it to be
saved, leaders of the his-
tolical society, led by
Henry H. Brylawski, a
Washington lawyer, per-
suaded municipal and fed-
eral authorities to stay its
dismantling.
In the moving and resto-
ration process that fol-
lowed the dramatic rescue,
the society was aided by a
matching grant of $100,000
from the U.S. Department
of Health and Urban De-
velopment. The restora-
tion was under the archi-
tectural supervision of
architect Leon Brown.

NY Jewish Areas
Benefit from New
Block-Busting Rule

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
authority of the New York
Secretary of State to pre-
vent "block-busting" tactics
in two sections of Queens
and two in Brooklyn has
been upheld in a .unanimous
ruling by the Appellate Di-
vision of the New York State
Supreme Court in Kings
County.
The East Flatbush and
Crown. Heights sections of
Brooklyn and the Cambria
Heights and Laurelton sec-
tions of Queens were once
completely Jewish but are
now integrated areas.
The American , Jewish
Congress, which filed a
friend-of-the-court brief
jointly with the Federation
of Laurelton Block Associa-
tions in the Appellate Cou'rt,'
called the ruling an impor-
tant step "in the continuing
fight to protect local neigh-
borhoods against the ma-
nipulation of racial fears for
profit."
A friend of the court brief
was also filed in the Appel-
late Court by the Anti-Defa-
mation League of Bnai
Brith.

— Day of Woe

Tisha

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyrigh 1975, JTA, Inc.)

The Fast of 'the Ninth of
Ab (Tisha b'Av) commemor-
ates misfortunes in Jewish
history.
Basically, this is the fast
day referred to in the pro-
phets as the "fast of the
fifth (month)." In that con-
text it is the fast that com-
memorates the destruction
of the first Temple in Jeru-
salem in the year 586 BCE.
However, this day was des-
tined to be a day of misfor-
tune in a number of other
respects.
The rabbis in the tal-
mudic literature claim that
this was the day on which
the community of the Israe-
lites wept after hearing the
report of the scouts, the ma-
jority of whom were dis-
couraged from attempting
to proceed towards the
promised land (Numbers
14:1).

Tradition has it that
they were told that be-
cause their tears displayed
a lack of faith on their
part, there would be an oc-
casion on this very day of
the calendar where tears
would be very much in or-
der, i.e., the day of the de-
struction of both Temples.

This tragic day was also
the day on which Betar fell
in the year 135 CE, thus pro-
viding the sad end to the re-
volt of Bar Kokhba. It so
happened that in the year
1306 CE the Jews were ex-

pelled from France on this
very date. Likewise did the
exile of the Jews from Spain
in 1492 take place on this
very day.
In the year 1555 the Jews
of Italy were forced out of
Rome into the first ghetto.
It is also recorded that the
famous Warsaw Ghetto was
also first occupied by the
Jews who were enclosed
there on the day of the
Ninth of Av.
Jewish tradition supports
a belief that on this date
which marked so many Jew-
ish tragedies the Messiah
will be born. This was an in-
dication that out of the
tragedies of the Jewish past
will spring the hope for tl
redemption of Israel in the-
future.

Cantor's Length
of Service Noted

An item appearing in last
week's Jewish News inad-
vertently stated that Cantor
Hyman Adler tif Cong. Bnai
David had been with that
congregation for 13 years.
The cantor has been asso-
ciated with the synagogue
for 31 years. The Jewish
News regrets the error.

The Jewish State

"A state cannot be
created by decree but by the
forces of a people and in the
course of generations. Even
if all the governments of the
world gave us a country it
would only be a gift of
words. But if the Jewish
people will go and build Pa-
lestine, the Jewish state
will become a reality — a
fact."
