Israel Replies to British Criticism for Sternists' Burial

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel informed Britain this
week that the state funeral
held last week for two mem-
bers of the Stern Group who
assassinated Lord Moyne in
1945 was part of an "on-
going effort of national rec-
onciliation" that "in no way
implies a change in the atti-
tude of the government of
Israel toward assassination
as a political instrument."
The message was deliv-
ered by telephone to the Bri-
tish Foreign Office by the
Israeli Ambassador in Lon-
don, Gideon Raphael, in re-
sponse to a British protest
over the honors accorded
1iahu Hakim and Eliahu
Tzuri who were hanged
in Cairo 30 years ago.
The protest was tele-
phoned to the foreign minis-
try here Sunday by the Bri-
tish ambassador, Sir
Bernard Ledwige, on behalf
of Foreign Secretary James
Callaghan.
The Israeli reply stated
that "the fact that the gov-
ernment of Israel has
sought the return of the
bodies of Hakim and Beit
Tzuri and was represented
at their reburial service in
no way implies a change in
the attitude of the govern-
ment of Israel toward as-
sassination as a political
instrument. Allon (Israeli
Foreign Minister Yigal
Allon) fails to understand
why Callaghan should see
the slightest link between
an act of grace involving
the distant and present
terrorism in the Mideast to
which Callaghan rightly
says, we are all anxious to
put to an end.
"It is disappointing that
this gesture of human de-
cency toward men who died
over 30 years ago should be

Jews' Remains
Back in Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
rael handed over 20 con-
victed terrorists from Sinai
and the Gaza Strip to Egyp-
tian authorities last week
and received in exchange
coffins bearing the remains
of Eliyahu Hakim and Ely-
ahu Beth Tzuri, who were
hanged in Cairo on March
23, 1945 for the murder of
Lord Moyne, the then Bri-
tish Resident Minister in
the Middle East.
The bodies were re-in-
terred with full military
honors at the military ceme-
tery on Mt. Herzl.
Hakim and Beth Tzuri
were members of the under-
ground Stern group of the
British Mandate era in Pa-
--- lestine. They assassinated
Lord Moyne in Cairo on
November (, 1944 and were
subsequently captured and
sentenced to death.
Relatives of both men
were at the Balooza check-
point in Sinai on June 25
when the bodies were ex-
changed for the terrorist
convicts. Also present were
Geula Cohen and Itzhak
Shamir, Knesset members
of Likud who were formerly
members of the Stern
group.

the cause of criticism in
Britain, a country which
has earned respect for her
balanced and dispassionate
assessment of her own colo-
nial past."
(In Britain, meanwhile,
the Herut Movement issued
a statement dissociating it-
self "from any criticism of
the government of Israel" in
connection with the return
of the remains of the two

Sternists.)
(Herut said it was "dis-
turbed" by "the alleged con-
tents of the message from
the president of the Board
of Deputies of British Jews
(Lord Fisher of Camden) to
Premier (Yitzhak) Rabin"
which was apparently criti-
cal of the honors accorded
Moyne's assassins. Herut
felt "nothing but praise for
the manner in which the

government of Israel has
handled this matter" and
expressed "fears" that criti-
cism from some Jewish
Diaspora communities
"may be an ominous portent
of things to come" if it re-
flected a belief "that reso-
lute actions by the govern-
ment of Israel may
constitute an imagined
threat to their own imme-
diate or local interests.")
