EMMA LAZARUS

Chocolate Chip,
Date Confection

Mark Twain and Bret
Harte.

Born of Spanish Jewish
parentage in 1849, Miss
Lazarus had no formal re-
ligious training. However,
when the news of Jewish
persecution in Russia,
Bulgaria and Germany
penetrated her sheltered
family life, she became
active in the cause.

She visited destitute fugi-
tives on Ellis Island and
helped them find homes.
She studied and began to
practice Judaism, and
pleaded for a "restored and
independent nationality and
repatriation in Palestine."
She became preoccupied
with the idea of freedom
and wrote "The New Colos-
sus."
Miss Lazarus died of can-
cer in 1887, 16 years before
her poem was affixed to the
Statue of Liberty.

Miss Lazarus wrote the
poem in 1883 as her contri-
bution to the fund-raising
campaign for the construc-
tion of a pedestal for the
Statue of Liberty, which
had not yet arrived from
France. The committee

Cuban Jews Stable
WJC Unit Reports

MONTREAL (JTA) —
Lau Becker, chairman of
the World Jewish Congress'
committee on small commu-
nities, reported on his re-
turn from -a -visit to Jewish
communities in the Carib-
bean area that the condition
of the Jewish community
Cuba remains unchanged:
According to Becker, who
is an honorary president. of
the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress, Cuban Jews maintain
five synagogues, adult and
youth Hebrew classes, a
youth group and a Hebrew-
Yiddish choral society.

Although diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel were sev-
ered' by Cuba in August
1973, Cuban Jews were per-
mitted to celebrate Israel's
Independence Day in 1974
and 1975, Becker reported.
