Frankenheimer Directs 'French Connection II'

John Frankenheimer, a
towering young man who
made himself a name as di-
rector of such motion pic-
tures as Bernard Malamud's
"The Fixer," "The Train,"
and "The Iceman Cometh,"
was at the helm of "The
French Connection II," a
sequel to the earlier adven-
tures of real-life New York
detective Eddie Egan.
Written by Robert and

•

Laurie Dillon in collabora-
tion with Alexander Jacobs,
and veraciously staged by
Frankenheimer, it stars
Gene Hackman as the pol-
iceman who attempts to de-
tect the link to an illicit dope
traffic on two continents.

Mrs. Lion Feuchtwanger,
widow of the playwright-
novelist who fought the
Nazis with the power of his
pen, showed at the Ameri-

laboration with Len-Film of
Leningrad.

Feuchtwanger wrote the
biographical novel in exile
during 1948 to 1950. It
deals with the earlier life
of the great Spanish
painter Francisco de Goya
up to his escape to France
during the Carlist wars.

The film shows the char-
acter transition, not only
through the intense per-
formance by Russian actor
Donatas Banionis, but
through the development of
drawings and sketches.
Konrad Wolf, son of the
German-language play-
wright Friedrich Wolf, au-
thor 'of "Prof. Mamlock,"
the anti-Nazi film of pre-
World II, directed the epic
picture.
