Romanian Jews Unhampered by Political, Other Restrictions

In Romania, the only
"Iron Curtain" country with
friendly diplomatic rela-
tions to Israel, Jews enjoy
full rights in all respects,
within the general political
limitations of the nation.
Owing to the liberal policy
of Romania which, however,
seems to be changing for the
worse, about 400,000 Jews
have emigrated since the
end of World War II, mostly
to Israel. The official esti-
mate of the present Jewish
community is 90,000 al-
though a figure between
50,000 and 60,000 is more

realistic.
According to the Encyclo-
paedia Judaica, the situa-
tion of Romanian Jewry al-
ways had a special
character. Even in the days
of complete dependence on
Moscow, when the tools and
institutions of national Jew-
ish identity were destroyed
and expression of Jewish as-
pirations were repressed,
Romanian Jewry was not
compelled to be as alienated
from its national and_ reli-
gious identity as were the
Jews of the Soviet Union.

the Jewish community in
Romania found itself in an
intermediate position. Its
activities displayed indica-
tions of free community life
as well as the limitations
imposed by the government.

Variations in the gov-
ernment's policy also re-
flected the connection be-
tween the status of
Romanian Jewry and the
official attitude of Ro-
mania toward Israel. This
mutual influence was ex-
pressed in all the areas of
Jewish life and especially
through the central issue
of the right to leave the
country and settle in Is-
rael.

In 1973 there existed 68
communities with 140 syn-
agogues. The Federation of
Communities maintains 78
cemeteries. There are tal-
mud Torah schools in 18
communities. The pupils of
the talmud Torah in Bucha-
rest formed a choir under
the direction of the corn-

poser Hayyim Schwartz-
man, who is also the conduc-
tor of the Yiddish State
Theater orchestra.

The federation main-
tains three recreation cen-
ters in the mountains and
at the sea for clergy, com-
munal workers and tal-
mud Torah pupils. There
are now four homes for the
aged, It supervises nine
kOsher restaurants and
soup kitchens where 1,685
people dine daily. About
5,172 people receive
monthly welfare allow-
ances, and 10,231 receive

Esteem for Kissinger Waning
Kalb Tells Yeshiva U. Friends

"We've seen the halo slip
on Henry Kissinger. All of a
sudden, a kind of mortality
rate has overtaken Henry
Kissinger."
Speaking to more than
300 guests and alumni of
Yeshiva University Wednes-
day at Cong. Shaarey Zedek
for the 20th annual dinrier
of the Detroit Friends of
Yeshiva University, CBS
newsman Bernard Kalb re-
capitulated the rise and fall
of American esteem for Sec-
retary of State Kissinger
since his arrival in Washing-
ton in 1969.
Co-author with his
brother newsman Marvin
Kalb of a book entitled
"Kissinger," Kalb recalled
how Americans applauded
Kissinger's "miracle
worker" role in Vietnam
which led to U.S. with-
drawal from that area and
how that distinction as a
result of "miscalculations"
about the Yom Kippur War
and the breakdown of nego-
tiations between Egypt and
Israel in March.

Daniel Laven, a founder of
the Detroit Friends, urged
continuing support for the
university.

Preceding Kalb, Dr.
Leon Fill, dinner chair-
man, praised the achieve-
ments of Yeshiva Univer-
sity and paid tribute to its
master builders and
science fellows (contribu-
tors of $18,000 and $25,000,
respectively) in whose
honor the dinner was held.

LONDON (JTA) — A
group of Polish Catholics
has without official sanc-
tion cleaned and restored
Warsaw's Jewish cemetery.
They emphasized that
Polish Catholics undertook
this action of their own ac-
cord without instigation
from Warsaw Jews.

Yeshiva University alum-
nus and dinner co-chair-
man, Howard Danzig, nar-
rated a series of slides on
the growth otYeshiva Uni-
versity. He cited the master
builders and science fellows
for their "vision, generosity
and leadership" and pre-
sented the honorees with
gifts.
Participating in the eve-
ning's program were Cantor
Shabtai Ackerman of Cong.
Beth Abraham - Hillel;
Rabbi Jack Goldman, Jew-
ish chaplain at Macomb
County Community College;

Nothing here:

LOW-BALANCE INTEREST is paid only on
the smallest amount in an account during
the entire interest period. (Most banks allow
ten days' grace at the beginning of each sav-
ings quarter.) Despite a large deposit on day
eleven of a quarter, no interest was paid be-
cause the smallest amount was zero on day
ten of the quarter.

NBS DAILY INTEREST is paid on each dollar
in your account every day it's on deposit.
This type of account (also called day-of-
deposit to day-of-withdrawal) gives you the
biggest return on passbook savings. In this
case, you earn 5% on the full amount for
82 days: 556.16

The difference between our daily interest and their low-balance method can mean
extra dollars for you every quarter on the same amounts of money put in and taken
out at the same times. If you make a lot of deposits and withdrawals, an NBS Pass-
book Savings Account is especially convenient—and especially profitable— because
you get every penny earned on every dollar saved for a day, a month, a year... or more.

Start getting 5% daily interest on your savings now at National Bank of Southfield.
Bring in your passbook from another bank and we'll even handle the transfer for
you. Your savings belong where every day and every dollar count!
