Frei. A prototype instrument is expected to be ready within a year and will be clinically evaluated at the Guttman Institute in New York City, one of the world's largest screening clinics, which ex- amines some 200 women daily. In the ultrasonic tech- nique, which follows the principles of sonar, pulses of sound are sent deep into body tissue to be reflected from various biological structures with differing intensitities. Because ultra- sonics measures differences in the elastic properties of tissue it may detect growths characterized by a different elasticity whose presence escapes detection by conven- tional X-ray and thermo- graphic techniques. The Weizmann Institute, meanwhile, has established a neurobiological section, headed by Prof. Uriel Lit- tauer. Prof. Littauer's group is studying the molecular as- pects and physiology of nerve and muscle cells in tis- sue culture in order to understand how the nervous system develops and func- tions. Dr. Israel Silman's group, also part of the new section is investigating the molecu- lar structure and function of two of the proteins in- volved in the transmission of impulses from nerve to muscle. Weizmann Teams Studying Disease REHOVOT — Two teams of Weizmann Institute of Science researchers are working on how disease works against the body's proteins. A team of chemists has succeeded in isolating dam- aged proteins which were affected by a cattle disease, dermatosparaxis. The scien- tists also discovered that the proteins could be healed by exposing them to enzymes present in the skin of nor- mal cattle. The team is now studying samples from humans who have a disease similar to the cattle disease. the roman erraee 27822 ORCHARD LAKE RD.
