Seminary Gets
Rare Books

NEW YORK — A collec-
tion of more than 10.000 vol-
umes, including unique
items and complete sets of
virtually all periodical: of
the 19th and 20th centuries
concerning Jewish scholar-
ship, has been presented to
the library of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America.

The collection will be
known as the Stroock-Lie-
berman library in honor of
the late Sol M. Stroock and
Prof. Saul Lieberman. Alan
M. Stroock, New York attor-
ney and president of the
seminary corporation,
helped the seminary to ac-
quire the collection in honor
of the centennial this year
of his late father. Prof. Lie-
berman, world renowned
Talmudist, assembled the
collection and participated
in the gift.

The books constitute the
research library of Prof.
Lieberman, who is rector of
the seminary's rabbinical
school and distinguished
service research professor of
Talmud, and have been pur-
chased by him throughout a
lifetime of study.

The Stroock-Lieberman
Library includes all tal-
mudic commentaries, most
of them in first edition — an
important consideration
when dealing with manu-
scripts or early printed vol-
umes, since early editions
contain the fewest printer's
emendations and errors. A
complete collection of ha-
lakhic responsa — from the
earliest to the beginning of
the 16th Century — is also
included.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Israeli army is cracking
down on soldiers with long
hair and sloppy uniforms.
Maj. Gen. Moshe Gidron,
head of the army's man-
power branch, announced
last week that special in-
spection units will patrol
the roads to stop any soldier
whose hair is too long or
whose uniform is impro-
perly worn.
The new regulations were
drawn up in response to the
Agranat Committee's report
criticizing discipline in the
