Romania Chief Rabbi Confers With Israel Jewish Leaders
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Romania's Chief Rabbi
Moshe Rosen, on a brief visit
here, said that he had found
a "common language" in his
talks with top government
and Jewish Agency officials
on the problems of his com-
munity.
Rabbi Rosen said that last
Friday night,-in all syn-
agogues in Romania, an
announcement had been
read out in his name advis-

Rabbi Rosen said this
announcement had not
been specifically linked to
any Bucharest govern-

The chief rabbi said he
was becoming confused by
all the statistics bandied
about in various quarters.
Some weeks ago he had said
in Australia that there were
some 70-80,000 Jews in Ro-
mania — but a closer scru-
tiny had led him to lower his
estimate somewhat.
(According to informed
sources in New York, but
unconfirmed, there was a
sudden spurt in the number
of exit visas issued to Ro-
manian Jews between June
4-16.
The sources said that
1,255 Romanians received
visas in that period, half of
them Jews. The approxi-
mately 600 visas issued in
that period brought the to-
tal number of exit visas
given to Romanian Jews
during the first six months
of this year to 900, the
sources said. That was
about one-fourth of the 3300
exit visas granted to Ro-
manian Jews in 1974.)
