Jewish View of Suicide By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.) If man is prohibited to pre-empt the prerogative of the Almighty in ending someone else's life, he surely has no right to volun- tarily end his own life: One medieval source (Sefer Chasidim, 675) regards sui- cide as being worse than murdering someone else. He gives three reasons: One, in committing suicide a person denies himself the possibility of penance. Sec- don, death is an atonement for sin. If the death is volun- tary it certainly cannot be regarded as an atonement. Third, a suicide denies that the Almighty is the master and owner of all life. A genuine suicide is de- nied burial rights and is not mourned. prepared by America's famous Sinai strictly kosher sausage co. 35 lbs. min. del. to home or office. 2-3 lb pastrami and/or 4-5 lb. pieces corned beef in Crayovac sealed bags. Richard Posthumus, direc- tor of the Michigan Beef Industry Commission, warned. He advised shoppers to stock up on any beef bar- gains featured by retailers in the next few weeks. From a consumer stand- point, this is a good time to watch for beef specials and buy enough to go through the summer. The Michigan Beef Indus- try Commission is a con- sumer information and industry promotion group. Posthumus said that beef prices last winter were the lowest they had been in two years and that there is now a shortage of cattle going to market, which has started prices rising. He explained that the present price increases stem from the fact that cattle feeders cut back on production of grain-fed animals last year_ after suffering large losses."
