AJCongress Urges Scrutiny of New Arab-Backed Bank NEW YORK (JTA) — The State Banking Department has been urged by the American Jewish Congress to demand assurances of non-discrimination on ac- count of race, religion or political considerations be- fore granting a charter to a new financial institution to be known as the United Bank, Arab and French, New York. In a letter to acting super- intendent Ernest Kohn, the AJCongress declared: "Many Arab commercial interests, expecially within the financial community, have publicly announced their intention to carry out the boycott objectives of the Arab League. "We believe it appropriate that your commission, as a precondition to the issuance of a charter, receive assur- ances that the business af- fairs of this new banking in- stitution will be conducted fully in conformity with the letter and spirit of our laws and with the national policy of this country as expressed both in the statements of our government and the en- actments of our legisla- ture." 'Friday, June 20, 1975 33 of California and Texas Commerce Bancshares — have reportedly applied to the State Banking Corn- mission for permission to establish the new financial institution, whose asso- ciates would include more than 20 Arab banks and several from Europe. An estimated 40 percent of the bank's initial $25 mil- lion capital will come from Arab sources, according to news reports. The United Bank, Arab and French (UBAF) currently operates 22 banks around the world, the AJCongress said. Meanwhile, Lehman Brothers, a 120-year-old Jewish investment banking firm in New York, has only one Lehman, John Robert Lehman, remaining on the board of the firm that bears his name. Among its many Arab- related activities, the firm acts as an adviser to Al- geria's national oil com- pany, is developing public financing plans for this Arab government and is negotiating with Kuwait for the construction of a major industrial installa- tion. The firm recently opened its first Middle East branch office in Cairo and does not appear on the Arab boycott list. girls' halters or polos Easy to take care of.
