Rabbi Benzion Shemtov, Father of Detroit Religious Leader Rabbi Bension Shemtov, father of Rabbi Berel Shem- tov, executive director of Michigan Lubavitch, and and international emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, died June 14 in Israel. Rep- resentatives of all Lubavitch institutions in Israel at- tended the funeral. Rabbi Shemtov was born in 1901 near Vilna, Russia. Before his Bar Mitzva he en- rolled in the Hasidic yeshiva in the town of Lubavitch. In his early 20's he helped or- ganize hedorim, Talmud Torahs, Mikvot and helped establish underground cen- ters for Jewish education in Soviet Russia. He was a member of the "blood-covenant minyan," a group of 10 Hasidim who swore to the previous Lu- bavitcher Rebbe that they would continue promoting Torah Judaism in commun- ist-held territories. In 1927, following his en- gagement to Esther Golda Futerfass, he was arrested by the Soviet authorities and sent to prison-camp in Siberia — his wedding taking place inside the prison in 1930. After six years' imprisonment, Rabbi Shemtov esta- blished a yeshiva in Paris. In 1948 he was sent by the Rebbe to London, England, where he started a heder. He traveled all over Britain and laid the groundwork for Lubavitch institutions throughout the United Kingdom. Rabbi Shemtov later moved to the world center of Lubavitch in New York and became an emissary of the RABBI SHEMTOV Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson.
