BONN (JTA) — The
chairman of the Central
Council of Jews in Ger-
many, Werner Nachmann,
50, is off on four weeks mili-
tary training.
Nachmann, who was re-
cently awarded West Ger-
many's Order of Merit by
President Walter Scheel,
says his decision to do vol-
untary military training is
to demonstrate the close-
ness of German Jews to the
new West German State.
Under present laws, Jews
are not obliged to do mili-
tary service in the Bunde-
s W ehr.

ments made by British
Foreign Secretary James
Callaghan at a dinner in
honor of Fahmi which,
Allon maintained, were in
discord with the spirit of
Security Council Resolu-
tion 242.

Callaghan said: "I know
Egyptian policy is firmly
founded on the permane-
nent realities of the Mideast
situation as well as on the
requirements of national
honor and interest, an end
to foreign occupation and
the recognition of the legiti-
mate rights of the Palesti-
nian people..."
Allon is understood to
have taken exception to the
last two expressions which,
he said, could imply a de-
mand for total evacuation of
all occupied areas and the
creation of a West Bank
Palestinian state.

JNF Shepherds
Corralling Herds

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Jewish National Fund
is trying to control unli-
censed herds of sheep and
goats that have proliferated
recently because of the high
price of meat and are ravag-
ing trees and vegetation in
the Negev.
The JNF said it was em-
ploying motorized inspec-
tion teams to track down
the herds and would file
complaints with the police.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Foreign Minister Yigal Al-
Ion called in the British Am-
bassador, Sir Bernard Led-
widge to voice Israel's
concern over reports of im-
pending massive Britian-
Egypt arms deals.
The reports followed last
week's visit to Britian by
Egyptian Foreign Minister
Ismail Fahmi. They spoke of
deals totalling nearly half a
billion Pounds Sterling.
British officials have
termed the reports prema-
ture — but have not denied
their substance.
