soft tip pen! Oldest Jewish Ritual Baths Found in Jerusalem

CROSS

JERUSALEM — The old-
est Jewish ritual baths ever
found by archeologists —
predating those at Masada
by 150-200 years — were un-
covered in the Hebrew Uni-
versity's third season of ex-
cavations, at the
Hasmonean winter palaces
site, south of Jericho, at the
mouth of Wadi Kelt.
The excavations were con-
ducted by the university's
institute of archeology With
the aid of the military gov-
ernment of Judea and Sa-
maria, the department of
antiquities of the ministry
of education and culture,
and the Israel Exploration
Society. Assistance was also
given by the America-Israel
Cultural Foundation. Su-
pervisor of the dig is archi-
tect Ehud Netzer. (Menczel)

of archeology.

of the pools there were
found concealed hundreds
of articles, mostly of pot-
tery, from the end of the
Hasmonean period.
The excavators this sea-
son finished uncovering the
large reception hall in Her-
od's winter palace, uncov-
ered last winter. The foun-
dation of the ornamented
marble floor which had
graced this hall (and was
stolen) is preserved almost
in its entirety. Under it, a
decorative mosaic floor be-
longing to a villa was re-
vealed. It too is from the
Herodian period, and was
there before the palace was
built.
The remnants of a large
dwelling from the Second
Century CE were uncovered
in their entirety in the
course of the excavations.
This house was apparently
destroyed by fire during the
Bar Kokhba revolt. Out-
standing among the fixtures
and pottery found in it is a
round oil lamp with 17 aper-
tures, decorated with a
grapevine motif.

To the west of the pool, a
block of buildings including
bath houses and ritual
baths was uncovered. The
ritual baths found here are
the earliest known in any
archeological find. In some

ings of Josephus Flavius.
It turns out that Samarat
is an artificial tel which
served as the foundation
for a building standing
upon it.

The southern part of the
tel functioned as.a theater
from which viewers could
watch horse and chariot
races on the adjacent track.
Parts of the wall surround-
ing the 320 by 80 meter race
track were uncovered. This
hippodrome is one of the
few of its kind to have ex-
isted in this country in the
past, and i,s the earliest
among them.
Meanwhile, scientists at
Hebrew University are mov-
ing from laboratory to. pilot
plant with a process for
rapid production of a pro-
tein substance by fermenta-
tion. The university thus
joins the scientific centers
seeking industrial solutions
to the world food shortage.
The university's fermen-
tation unit, situated in the
Gudelsky Building on the
medical campus, has just
signed a two-year contract
with Dor Chemicals, Ltd., of
Haifa, for development of a
process for the production

If the process reaches
the stage of full produc-
tion, it will yield up to
100,000 tons per year of a
protein-rich poultry feed,
replacing one-fourth of the
soy bean feed imported
annually in Israel at a sav-
ing of some $30 million
yearly in- precious foreign
exchange.

It also will advance the
world-wide search for ways
to produce more animal feed
without taking up acreage
need for meat production —
the main source of protein
in the human diet. Further,
it will point to a way to re-
lease for human consump-
tion a portion of the world's
fish harvest now turned into
fish meal for animals.
The head of the fermenta-
tion unit, Prof. Richard I.
Mateles, stresses that SCP
is not an artificial food. "It
is a real, organic protein
food, grown industrially,
not agriculturally," he ex-
plains, pointing out that its

a fairly large scale, has a
pure and constant compos-

is made from, is water sol-

Just as baker's yeast is

on methanol, multiply rap-
idly, and are harvested con-

Holtzman Sees
Russian Home,
Another Stopped

Two of five Congressmen
visiting the Soviet Union
last week had mixed results
when they tried to visit vil-
lages where their ancestors
came from.
The Congressmen are
members of the House Judi-
ciary Committee's subcom-
mittee on immigration. Rep.
Elizabeth Holtzman (D-NY)
was given V.I.P. treatment,
and she conferred with Val-
erie Turchin, head of the
Moscow chapter of Amnesty
International and . other
Russian dissidents.
She was treated to a ban-
quet in her mother's village
near Kiev. Her mother left
Russia in 1921, and is head
of the Russian department
at Hunter College. -
Rep. Edward Mezivinsky
(D-Iowa), however, was told
that his family could not
visit their ancestral village
because it was located in a
"closed area."
