not only is a direct descen-
dant of Benjamin Disraeli,
the 19th Century British
Prime Minister, but traces
his family roots to Daniel
Mendoza, the 18th Century
bare-fist champion who in-
troduced exhibition boxing
to England.
In his 49th film, "The Re-
turn of the Pink Panther,"
Sellers further develops the
art of prize-fighting into an
admittedly "fake" karate
game with his Oriental com-
panion Burt Kwouk. This is
a gimmick that springs
from his earlier Blake Ed-
wards pictures, "A Shot in
the Dark" and "The Pink
Panther."
Inspector
Sellers
is
Jacques Clouseau. From
deadpan mayhem to athletic
awkwardness, the bumbling
French detective's cries of
pain, shame and bewilder-
ment are transmuted into
audience enjoyment. Clo-
seau is the Latin answer to
Sherlock Holmes, a cartoon
characterization down to
the private-eye trenchcoat
and self-confidence.
The now-50-year-old ac- .
tor was born into the thea-
ter making his debut at the
ripe age of two weeks
when carried onto the
stage by Dickie Hender-
son. His parents both were
in show business and Sell-
ers prides the fact that
eight of his uncles were
stage producers at the
same time.
Sellers became known to
Sidney Lumet, director
of the highly acclaimed
all-star, "Murder on the
Orient. Express," has com-
pleted for Warner Bros.
"Dog Day Afternoon,"
dramatizing the real-life,
and rather extraordinary
bank robbery which took
place in Brooklyn in 1972.
Lumet signed for the
leads his "Serpico" star Al
Pacino who is teamed with
John Gazale of "Godfather"
and "The Conversation."
Leonard Lamensdorff is
writer-executive producer
for Sam Arkoff's latest,
"Cornbread, Earl and Me," a
black picture destined to
create a new trend in ci-
nema morality. Both sides
in the racial conflict are pre-
sented with complete fair-
ness.

Secret Talks
in "The Ladykillers," three
years later with his award-
winning portrayal of shop
steward Fred Kite in "I'm
All Right, Jack," reaching
world fame.
Sellers has played 46 dif-
ferent characters in his ca-
reer. It is only as Jacques
Closeau that he has re-
peated the same part three
times. Edwards and Sellers
reveal that they still plan
another sequel to the sequel
if the current picture should
become an unprecedented
success. In that case they
would also consider a televi-
sion series centering around
the inimitable Inspector
Clouseau.
NEW YORK — President
Anwar Sadat proposed se-
cret talks with Israel in
1972, according to a forth-
coming autobiography by
former Premier Golda Meir.
In her book "My Life," to
be published in October,
Mrs. Meir writes that Presi-
dent Nieolae Ceausescu of
Romania acted as an inter-
media•y.
But the meeting did not
take place, and Mrs. Meir
says that she never found
out why.
According to the book, the
first contact over the secret
meeting came from a Ro-
manian Deputy Foreign
Minister visiting Tel Aviv.
