The award was presented at the recent awards luncheon of the Flint Chapter of Women's American ORT. * * * Flint Chapter, Women's American ORT, recently held its awards luncheon at which Mrs. Irwin Kurtz of Southfield, national ORT board member, made the presentations. Receiving the Golden Cir- cle Award for contributing $1,000 or more were Mes- dames Sanders Goodstein and Peter Goodstein. Donor pin recipients, who contrib- uted $100 or more, were FJCC Holds Petition Drive Backing Israel The community relations committee of the Flint Jew- ish Community Council is circulating petitions in the Flint area and outstate Michigan in support of Is- rael. Addressed to President Ford, the petition reads, "We, the undersigned, agree that the United States and Israel have a mutual con- cern based on a common philosophy of democracy and freedom. The two na- tions stand together as part- ners striving for human dignity. We petition our government's support for the survival, security and ec- onomic well being of the sovereign state of Israel, a firm ally of the United States." A petition booth was set up at Genesee Valley shop- ping center May 25 and 26. Pelavin, presi- dent of the Flint Jewish Community Council, was one of 100 national United Jewish Appeal leaders par- ticipating in "Calls for Sur- vival," a telephone solicita- tion program held in conjunction with the New York City UJA-Federation of Jewish Philanthropies' Total Mobilization program, that raised more than $3.2 million in three days. General Chairman Frank R. Lautenberg said that the cooperative effort between the national UJA and the New York organization, which took place May 19-22, and in which national solici- tors worked with an equal number of local leaders, marked an outstanding ex- ample of a joint fund-rais- ing effort. Japan May Give Loan to Egypt TOKYO (ZINS) — Japan is moving ahead with plans to lend Egypt $140 million to finance the first stage of a seven-year project to widen and deepen the Suez Canal for ships up to 250,- 000 tons. The loan was pledged in December 1973. According to an agree- ment signed in Cairo the loan is to be repaid over 25 years, including a seven- year grace period, at 2 per- cent interest.
