Driver's License
Renewal Test Is
Printed in Yiddish

Historian Allan A. War-
sen has helped make it eas-
ier for Yiddish speakers to
renew their Michigan driv-
er's licenses.
Noticing a small item in
Motor News, the publication
of the Michigan chapter of
the Automobile Association
of America, Warsen found
that the Michigan driver's li-
cense renewal test is printed
in 12 languages.
He inquired to Secretary
of State Richard Austin if
the test was printed in Yid-
dish. He was told that it was
• not, but if he knew how to
do it his assistance would be
appreciated.

He got together with
Wolf Snyder, a local Yid-
dish teacher, who did the
actual translating while
Warsen did all the behind-
the-scenes work. The re-
sult is a Yiddish language
driver's license renewal
test printed in Hebrew
characters.

Warsen, a member of the
Jewish Community Center's
Yiddish Committee, said the
test is available at the Secre-
tary of State's office in Lin-
coln Shopping Center, Oak
Park. Warsen said that
when the revision of the ini-
tial driver's license exami-
nation is completed, it too
will be translated.
The test has been trans-
lated into Arabic, Korean,
all of the Romance lan-
guages, German and some
Scandinavian languages.

Arthur Fields is a candi-
date in Tuesday's election
for a seat on the Southfield
Board of Education.
Fields, of Artie Fields
Productions in Detroit,
which does creative broad-
cast services and educa-
tional films, said that in
talking to many students he
had found that youngsters
are disenchanted with an
educational process which
does not prepare them for
jobs.
Fields said many South-
field residents are disen-
chanted by the lack of disci-
pline within the schools.
"I would like to see better
programs not more pro-
grams," he said.
Also running for the post
is Norma Jean Shufro, who
