Oldest Synagogue Marks Bicentennial

York, the oldest synagogue
in the country, marked the
Bicentennial this week with
a commemeration of the
Jewish role in the American
Revolution.
The congregation, known
as sympathetic to the rebel
cause, was forced by the

TEL AVIV — The Attor-
ney General of Israel, Meir
Shamgar, was appointed
justice of the Israel Su-
preme Court.
Shamgar is expected to
spend some time lecturing
in the U.S. — on behalf of
the government's informa-
tion effort — before joining
the Supreme Court -bench
after the summer recess.
He was one of the leading
members of the "think
tank" which Premier Yit-
zhak Rabin set up to draft
options and projections be-
fore and during the Kissin-

Shamgar as Israel attorney
