HAIFA — A leader of Is- rael's Christian Maronite community may appeal to the U.S. and France to help stop the bloodshed in Leba- non where his co-religion- ists are sporadically fight- ing Palestinians. Anis Abboud, secretary of the 3,000-member commu- nity in Israel, said the ma- jority of the Maronite com- munity lives in Lebanon and the desire to emigrate was growing among the mem- bers. He' declared that Israel's first president, Dr. Chaim Weitzmann, once promised Maronite Patriarch Anton- ius Areideh that if the Jew- ish state were proclaimed, it would help the Maronites of Lebanon if they were in danger. Abboud charged that the Lebanese Moslems were trying to gain control of the country, in a bid to step up terrorist operations against Israel.
