Shapp and Robert St. John, noted author, lecturer and broadcaster, will deliver major addresses at the 46th annual convention of the National Federation of Jew- ish Men's Clubs to be held July 27-31 at the Conco'rd Hotel. A highlight of the conven- tion will be the presentation of the organization's coveted distinguished service award to Dr. Joel S. Geffen, who was the federation's spirit- ual adviser for more than 30 years and who occupies the position of director of field activities and community education of The Jewish Theological Seminary of America. The convention theme will be "Crucial Challenges: Re- dedication for Survival." The pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, an almost fanatical love of justice, and the desire for personal inde- pendence — these are the features of the Jewish tradi- tion which make me thank my stars that I belong to it. — Albert Einstein Temple, Church Share Building Nearly 450 members of a Reform Jewish congrega- tion and an Episcopalian parish marked the historic joint ownership of a church building in Ann Arbor. The agreement between Temple Beth Emeth and St. Clare of Assisi Episcopal Church is apparently the first time a Jewish and a Christian congregation will jointly own a place of wor- ship. A service before the out- door festivities featured clergy from both religions; Ann Arbor Mayor Albert Wheeler; and Rabbi Daniel Hachen, regional director for the Northeast Lake Re- gion of the Union of Ameri- can Hebrew Congregations. While the two congrega- tions share some adult ed- ucation courses and an underlying sense of com- munity, the Rev. Douglas Evett of St. Clare empha- sized that they do not wor- ship together. The bishop of the Episco- pal Diocese of Michigan must still approve the ar- rangement but his assent is considered assured.
