The Jewish philosopher,
Moses Mendelssohn had
the same problem. He was
a hunchback and when he
first went to see the young
woman he married, she
shrank back noting his
deformity.
Mendelssohn told her that
he could understand her at-
titude. He went on to tell a
little story. He said he had
been present when she was
about to be born and the an-
gels had decided that she
was to have this deformity,
but he had pleaded with
them to give him the de-
formity instead.
Mendelssohn told this
story so beautifully that she
forgot his physical looks and
he appeared beautiful to
her. And the pair were to be
the grandparents of Felix
Mendelssohn, who wrote the
wedding march among
other things.
So those who are not so
good looking should not give
up.
Dr. Wilbur J. Cohen, sec-
retary of health, education
and welfare in the Johnson
Administration, was
stopped by a guard when he
tried to revisit the depart-
ment, the papers report.
Jack Benny once visited the
White House. He brought
his violin along. The White
House guard stopped him.
"What have you there?"
asked the guard. "A bomb,"
replied Benny. "That's all
right," smiled the guard,
recognizing him. "I was af-
raid it might be your violin."
