Kibutz Is Tourist Attraction

In 1949, a group of 80 set-
,Hers, including several De-
troiters, began a kibutz in
the western Galilee near
Haifa on the Mediterra-
nean, and began the task of
turning barren, sandy
wasteland into a fertile col-
lective.
The 80 original settlers at
Gesher Haziv have swelled
to more than 450, according
to Mike and Tsila Duvdvani
from Toronto and New
York, who were among the
pioneers, and now - manage
the kibutz guest house.
They were in Detroit last
week with Jacob Daker of
th- Israel Government
'ist office in Chicago to
piumote visiting the mod-
dern accomodations on 21
Israeli kibutzim.

Duvdvani said the ki-
butz guest houses offer a
unique way of finding out
what a kibutz really is,
while offering low-cost,
modern accomodations
and special advantages for
children such as swim-
ming pools, farm animals,
open space and a chance to
meet Israelis.

Daker said the Israel Min-
istry of Tourism is making a

The Duvdvanis said that
most of the 21 kibutzim

a room and breakfast for
two persons.
Mrs. Duvdvani said that
the kibutz offers tours, lec-
tures and slide presenta-
tions for those who stay
longer, and makes special
arrangements for youth
groups who want to live and
work in an Israeli commu-
nity.
Gesher Haziv now pro-

The Duvdvanis and Daker

Israel's Economy Threatens
ME Peace, Industrialist Says

Israel's 40 percent infla-
tion rate, coupled with a
$3.5 billion trade deficit,
constitutes a major hurdle
to a lasting Mideast peace,
according to a leading Is-
raeli industrialist who
spoke Tuesday to the Eco-
nomic Club of Detroit.

Amit said Israel has cho-
sen three main areas in
which to increase exports:
chemicals, electronics and
advanced metalwork.

Amit would not specu-
late on how much the Arab
blacklist was hurting Is-
rael's economy, but said:

"Until recently, it was
just a nuisance; now it's
gaining momentum . . .
and it's starting to cause
damage."

awarded the James K.

Israeli Pound
Devalued Again?

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Ru-
mors of a new devaluation
of the Israel pound pro-
duced a flurry of excitement
on the black market with
the price of the U.S. dollar
rising to IL. 7 as compared
with the -official rate of ex-
change of U.S. $1 --IL. 6.
The activity on the black
market was also a result of
information given over the
radio that the U.S. dollar
was gaining in international
money markets.

It is in vain for a man to
rise early who has the re-
pute of lying in bed all the
morning.
