Rabbi Stollman Honored by Vaad;
Tells of Faith in Israel's Destiny

For the 450 attendees at
the 46th annual dinner of
the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis and Merkaz, Tues-
day, at the Sheraton-South-
field Hotel, the event was an
occasion to welcome and
honor Rabbi Isaac Stollman,
who came here with his wife
for the occasion from Israel.
Describing life' in his
home established in Jerusa-
lem when he left his Detroit
rabbinic post 10 years ago
as "Heaven on earth," Rabbi
Stollman described the
sanctity of life there, the
faith and dedication.
He said there is not only
pride in statehood but also
the confidence in an ability
to overcome obstacles.

Rabbi Stollman ap-
pealed for uninterrupted
cooperation with the
builders of Zion. He ap-
pealed for aliya; for the
settlement Israel by the
Jews in the Diaspora.

"Our concern is for Amer-
ican Jewry," he said. "We do
not live in fear and are not
worried about ourselves. We
are worried about you,

Latest Volumes
Are Impressive

In an impressive guide for
literary students, published
as a paperback in the Pocket
Books series by Simon
and Schuster, outstanding
works of recent years are
under review.
In "Teaching Aids for
Enriched Classics," Prof.
Harry Shefter of New York
University assists students
in analytical study of some
of the very great and a num-
ber of the sensational works
of the last few decades.
As editor Shefter's ex-
planatory note indicates,
plot and theme develop-
ments are dealt with, char-
acterization, style and
structure techniques are
evaluated in dealing with
the various narratives.

Egypt Theater
Ridicules Soviets

Gentlemen:

TUNIS (ZINS) — Egyp-
tian theaters are offering
entertainment heaping ridi-
cule on the Soviet Union.
One presentation, entitled
"Long Live the Delegation,"
describes how Soviet bu-
reaucrats engage in contra-
band and "exploit the Egyp-
tian people and other Arab
countries." "The Red Eagle"
has the same theme and is
riddled with sarcastic refer-
ences about the Russians.

about your Jewish future."
He said the concern is
over the loss of the youth,
the increasing rate of inter-
marriage, and he appealed
for great religiosity, for in-
creased educational tasks,
for learning and loyalty to
Torah.
Recalling his own pi-
oneering efforts in Detroit,
he pointed to his having
been the organizer of the
Yeshivat Beth Yehuda and
of the role he played in the
Vaad and Merkaz, and he
expressed pride in the
growth registered by the
faithful in Detroit.

David Hermelin, as
toastmaster, headed a
group of participants in
the program that included
Rabbi Samuel Prero, Can-
tor Hyman Adler, Max
Sosin, Rabbi Joshua
Sperka and Irwin I. Cohn.

Avern Cohn, as one of the
principal speakers of the
evening, gave a history of
the Vaad and its activities
since its formation in 1930
by Rabbi Moses Fischer and
a group of participating rab-
bis. He described the imx
portance of the Beth Din
conducted by the Vaad and
the manner in which kash-
rut is being supervised here.
Rabbi Leizer Levin, intro-
ducing Rabbi Stollman, en-
thusiastically acclaimed the

work of the Vaad as having
been marked by unity in the
community in behalf of
kashrut observance and su-
pervision. He gave an over-
view of the work being ac-
complished under the
direction of Rabbi Haskel
Grubner and maintained
that the unity achieved is
one of the high marks of tra-
ditional Jewry's progressive
role in Detroit.
Rabbi James Gordon,
speaking in behalf of ;: h-.e
rabbinical group whic
companied him for the task,
presented to Rabbi Stoll-
man an engraved plaque
containing the text of a tes-
timonial which appeared in
The Jewish News two weeks
ago and the appended en-
dorsement by some 40 syn-
agogues and congregational
groups and their rabbis and
leaders.
