Alperin's Yiddish Biography Reviews
Services to Jewry by Dr. Israel Goldstein

A most meritorious biog-
raphy of Dr. Israel Gold-
stein, one of world Jewry's
most distinguished leaders,
gains significance in its hav-
ing been written and pub-
lished in Yiddish.
Aaron Alperin, the emi-
nent author of this 445-page
book, which was published
in Israel, under the title "A
Leben fun Shlihut: — A
Life of Many Missions" —
treats both the subject of
his biography and the lan-
guage in which it was writ-
ten as labors of love.
Thus, the work is an ex-
pression of hero worship.
Dr. Goldstein, a native of
Philadelphia, was raised in
a Yiddish-speaking home.
He belongs to the select now
in the rabbinate who is as
much master of Yiddish as
he is in English — and he
has earned the reputation of
being one of American Je-
wry's outstanding orators.
Therefore, for Alperin his

hero also is the noted per-
sonality who fulfills his
hope of continuity for Yid-
dish as a living language.

While every aspect of
Dr. Goldstein's life is
touched and extensively
elaborated, it is the Zionist
and the devoted worker in
the ranks of the builders of
Israel who emerges in
great glory in these pages.

Alperin traces Dr. Gold-
stein's youth, his student
days, his devotion to learn-
ing.
Step by step, he reviews a
career which led Dr. Gold-
stein to leadership in the
Zionist movement, to the
presidency of the Zionist
Organization of America
and the Jewish National
Fund.
There were no limita-
tions, however. Dr. Gold-
stein's role as president of
the American Jewish Con-
gress defines his activities
in the civic-protective ranks
and in the battle for justice
for the Jew and the dis-
tressed among other peoples
in this land.

As head of the Jewish
Conciliation Court, as par-

ticipant in public affairs
efforts in support of the
Zionist cause and the in-
fant state of Israel, Dr.
Goldstein's life as depicted
here is one of major signif-
icance in Jewish ranks.

Then came the interna-
tional role, the chairman-
ship of the Keren Hayesod,
the travels throughout the
world, in many lands.

On one of these travels
Dr. Goldstein established
close contact with the Falas-
has, and the description of
these experiences mark a
valuable historic chapter in
this biography.

In effect, the Alperin bi-
ography emerges also as a
history of American Jewry
and of Zionism. His role in
the Tercentenary of Ameri-
can Jewry, which was cele-
brated in 1954, provided
added historical material
for this labor of love by an
eminent writer.

Also, the array of noted
world and American Jew-
ish leaders who were Dr.
Goldstein's co-workers in

the libertarian efforts adds
to the interest this work
must attract not only
among Dr. Goldstein's
admirers but also in gen-
eral Jewish ranks.

Fulfillment of a task in
Yiddish, as a glorification of
the language, as a dedica-
tion to the literary values of
Yiddish, provides the un-
usual significance to a work
about an American Jewish
leader who rose to interna-
tional recognition.

Syria, Jordan Continue Build-Up

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Syria and Jordan are con-
tinuing their military prep-
arations despite Syria's
commitment to renew the
UNDOF mandate for an-
other six months.
Observers here noted that
the Syrian action did not as-

They said Israel was pre-

military action by Syria
despite the UN mandate.
They added that Syria has
allowed terrorists to go to
Israel through the Golan
Heights despite the disen-
gagement.

Leftist Coalition Has Parley

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel's new left of center
political faction, "Ya'ad"
(Destination) chose the new
development town of Shlomi
near the Lebanese border
for its first official meeting
last week.
The 300 delegates repre-
sented a majority of Shu-
lamit Aloni's Civil Rights
Party and a minority of two
other dissident movements,
Libun and Shinooy.
Shinooy, made up of intel-
lectuals and academicians
opposed to the government's
policies, split on the issue of
merging with Ya'ad. Its
leader, Prof. Amnon Rubin-
stein and a majority of his
followers, refused to join
the new faction on grounds
that its orientation was too
far to the left.

Aloni, who quit the Cab-
inet of Premier Yitzhak
Rabin when the National
Religious Party joined his
coalition, declared that
Ya'ad was an historical
must for Israel.

Zionism in Israel
Is Up, Study Says

JERUSALEM — Zionism
is on the upswing among
high school pupils in Israel,
according to a study by
Prof. Simon Herman of the
Hebrew University's depart-
ment of psychology and In-
stitute of Contemporary
Jewry.
In a follow-up to his ear-
lier investigations of Jewish
identity, Prof. Herman
found that in 1974, 80 per-
cent of high school youth
saw themselves as Zionists
— compared to 65 percent in
1965. The figures were pro-
portionately higher among
religious youth.

"In a society where might
is right, where there are
compromise agreements
between Yitzhak Rabin and
Yitzhak Rafael (of the
NRP), we are the new
light," she said.
Gen. (Rees.) Matityahu
Peled, who decided to join
Ya'ad only shortly before its
establishment, said he had
believed in the past that it
was possible to change the
system by working within
the existing political frame-
work. Now, he said, he has
come to the conclusion the
"it was silly to believe this.

A committee of young
Arab political activists in
Israel sent a telegram of
congratulations to the new
movement and said they
would join it.

Some .political observers
have expressed doubts over
the future of Ya'ad. They
see it as almost identical in
its political and social views
to Mapam which is a mem-
ber of the Labor Alignment.
Voters who share these
views are more likely to cast
their ballots for Mapam
than for the new faction, the
observers said.
