jor national research ef-

According to the Encyclo-
paedia Judaica. the initial
phase of atomic energy de-
velopment in Israel con-
sisted of two enterprises.
The first was a survey of the
natural resources of the
country, particularly with
respect to the nuclear raw
materials uranium and
thorium. Only low-grade
deposits, primarily asso-
ciated with phosphate
rocks, were located. •
The second enterprise
was the initiation of a train-
ing program to provide the
necessary scientific and
technical staff for possible
application of atomic energy
to the national economy.

The next phase was the
establishment of the Israel
Atomic Energy Commis-
sion in 1952. The members

The first research center
was lcicated in temporary

the assistance of the U.S.
under the 1955 Atoms for
Peace Program, states the
Encyclopedia Judaica. This
reactor became operational
in 1960.
Other facilities at Sorek
include hot laboratories,
and research laboratories
for physics and chemistry,
as well as health-physics,
electronics and mechanical
services. A Radioisotope
Training Center, a joint

basic training in the tech-

radioactivity.
A second nuclear research
