Viktor Stern Jailed on Parasitism Charge

NEW YORK, (JTA) —
Viktor Stern, son of Dr.
Mikhail Stern, has been ar-
rested by Soviet authorities
and charged with parasi-
tism, it was reported by the
National Conference on So-
viet Jewry. He was ordered
to work as a porter in a
brick factory but has dec-
lined.
Viktor has been seeking
an exit visa to go to Israel.
At the same time, August
Stern, Viktor's brother, told
the Student Struggl . for
Soviet Jewry in a phone call
from Israel, that Dr. Stern's
physical condition has wors-
ened sharply. Dr. Stern is in
a labor camp near Kharkov
where he is serving an eight-
year sentence.
In another development,
28 Moscow Jewish activists
have appealed to the Inter-
national Telecommunica-
tion Union, a United Na-
tions affiliate, protesting
the wiretapping and discon-
nection of their phones by
Soviet authorities, accord-
ing to the SSSJ. The activ-
ists stated that 150 phones
in Moscow alone have been
cut since the time of former
President Nixon's USSR
visit three years ago.

In a letter to ITU, the
activists revealed an offi-
cial decree which forbids
phone calls "for purposes
contradictory to the state's
interests and to the public
order." Such a decree,
they declared, "proves the

existence and authorizes
the use of wiretapping.
Since the decree, selective
wiretapping has become
widespread, with conse-
quent disconnections."

Meanwhile, the SSSJ re-
ported that former prisoner
of conscience Oleg Frolov of
Rayzain, has been given per-
mission to emigrate to Is-
rael.

In London, it was re-
ported that Col. Yefim Davi-
dovich of Minsk was offi-
cially informed that he has
been stripped of his military
rank and his army pension
following' his address at a
commemorative gathering
at the site of the former
Minsk ghetto.

Dr. Aleksandr Voronel,
who only recently emi-
grated from the Soviet
Union after suffering years
of harassment, unveiled the
exhibit.

Demonstrators organized by the Westchester Stu-
dents for Soviet Jewry, a SSSJ affiliate, burn a mock
Pepsi machine outside Pepsico's annual shareholders
meeting at world Pepsico headquarters in Purchase,
N.Y. The youths charged that Pepsico and its board
chairman Donald Kendall refuse to use their close com-
mercial contacts with the Kremlin to intervene for So-
viet Jews. Kendall led the business lobby fight against
the Jackson Amendment. After the burning, the protes-
ters sat in and blocked Pepsico's entrance to symbolize
the denial of exit visas to Russian Jews.
