Allon Lashes U.S. Shipment of Arms to Jordan, Saudis

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Foreign Minister Yigal Al-
lon flatly accused the
United States Monday of
arming Israel's Arab adver-
saries while suspending
arms deals with Israel.
Addressing the Knesset
in response to agenda mo-
tions by Likud, Allon
charged that the American
deal to supply Jordan with
surface-to-air "Hawk" mis-
sile systems and anti-air-
craft guns "strengthen the
military power of that coun-
try and increases its ability
to become a partner to
Egypt and Syria's military
option."

He also warned that the
continuous flow of Ameri-
can military aid to Saudi
Arabia posed a definite
threat to the balance of
power in the Middle East.

Israel, declared Allon, is
entitled to expect that
while the U.S. was sus-
pending arms deals with
Israel "it would do the
same with respect to Jor-
dan" pending U.S. reas-
sessment of Middle East
policy.

Allons remarks were
viewed by many observers
here as an unprecedented
attack by a foreign minister
of Israel on the U.S.
Allon, who visited Wash-
ington only last month for
talks with Secretary of
State Henry A. Kissinger,
also criticized the U.S. for
postponing a planned visit

Among its many-faceted programs, Young Israel has always looked
towards aiding in the development of various communities that
appear to have potential for the Orthodox Jewish family.

In this vein, we respectfully recommend a new condominium community
that is rising in the State of Florida to be known as - The Oaks, -
located on Stirling Road in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This community —
now being completed — is directly across from the new Young Israel of
Hollywood.,

The National Council of Young Israel endorses this new condominium
community as one that has great development potential for the Young
Israel family and for all Orthodox Jews.

We recommend that, for all persons contemplating a move to Florida,
either on a permanent basis or for a "second home," a visit to
- The Oaks" may prove to be quite beneficial to
you. While there,
we suggest that you talk to the officers of the Young Israel of
Hollywood for further guidance and information.
Respectfully,

"The timing and back-
ground of the U.S.-Jordan
arms deal will serve as an
encouragement to extremist
factors in the Arab world to
push the Arab states in the
direction of war," Allon
said.

Eliezer Berri, of Likud,
said the U.S. supply of
weapons to the Arab coun-
tries made it all the more
logical for Israel to consider
a pre-emptive policy. Ye-
huda Shaari of the indepen-
dent Liberal Party, rejected
such a policy and proposed
that Israel find new ways to
reach a breakthrough for a
Middle East settlement.
He observed however
that, "It would be most pe-
culiar to find American
Hawks (in Jordan) bringing
down American Phantoms"
of Israel.

I sometimes think that
the saving grace of America
lies in the fact that the over-
whelming majority of
Americans are possessed of
two great qualities — a
sense of humor and a sense
of proportion.

Israel UN Status in Trouble
Congressman Drinan Warns

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)
— Americans and Chris-
tians will be presented with
an ominous challenge this
fall if Third World countries
in the UN General Assem-
bly seek to suspend or expel
Israel from that body.
This warning was made
last week by the Rev. Robert
F. Drinan, U.S. Congress-
man from Massachusetts, in
a commencement address to
St. Joseph's College stu-
dents.
"Arab nations, made
proud and arrogant by their
possession of 60 percent of
the known oil reserves of the
world, will use their eco-
nomic power to intimidate
nations of Africa and Asia
to join the enemies of Israel
in seeking to humiliate this
tiny nation of three million
Jews," he said.

This movement to alter
Israel's status in the
United Nations may
emerge next October or
November, the Democratic
legislator predicted.

Several non-aligned na-
tions met recently in Ha-
vana to plan the details of
their conspiracy to suspend
Israel, he said. "A more
graphic example of an early
warning to Christians about
a new form of anti-Semi-
tism could hardly be imag-
ined," stated Father Drinan,
who added:
"Will Christians finally
act affirmatively to expiate
their guilt about the slaugh-
