Penney celebrated the grand opening of its first full-line department stores in the Detroit area Wednesday, with ribbon- cutting ceremonies at Northland Center and East- land Center. The Northland unit opened for business last week. The ceremonies marked the first stage of J. C. Pen- ney's planned full-line ex- pansion in the Detroit mar- ket, which will involve construction of seven to nine full-line department stores with a total store area of more than two mil- lion square feet. The Northland unit is the largest store operated by J. C. Penney, containing 333,000 square feet of space. J. C. Penney auto centers, located near the stores, will also open later this year. The Northland and East- land stores will aso broaden their customer service with catalog sales departments.
