Is that all bad? Not ac-
cording to Leslie Tonner,
author of "Nothing But
the Best: The Luck of the
Jewish Princess," who
contends that all that par-
ental love and indulgence
makes for a confident hu-
man being with an un-
matched drive for success.

In her book, published by
Coward, McCann and Geo-
hegan, Ms. Tonner traces
the development of the Jew-
ish American Princess,
from a suppressed second
class shtetl member who
studied no Hebrew, Torah
or Talmud to a "cultivated,
educated and cultured" hu-
man being.
Ms. Tonner looks beyond
the Saks-clothed, Sassoon-
hairstyled, bejeweled, ma-
terialistic snob, the common
"JAP" stereotype, to the
essence of Jewish princess-
hood.
"Being a Jewish Princess
has to do with heritage and
upbringing, not with pro-
files or department store de-
meanor. Jewish heritage
means a little girl has been
more often than not adored,
beloved, golden child. She
exhibits an unmistakable
confidence, an inbred belief
in herself that comes from
being the center of attention
in the most child-centered
of homes. Her drive, her
special chutzpah, is the real
mark of the Jewish Prin-
cess, not her resemblance to
an predefined stereotype."

In humorous detail Ms.

The Jewish Americ an
Princess settles for noth ing
but the best — the b est-
clothes, the best schools, the
best car, the best of every-
thing.
And why not?
She lives in the land of
plenty where "Take Advan-
tage of Everything" is her
code. Her doting and indul-
gent Jewish American
Mommy and Daddy, who
are of Eastern European
descent, had to do without
and in turn will prevent
their daughter from know-
ing what it is to want.

Tonner describes the
training of the Jewish
American Princess which
begins at an early age. Ms.
Tonner recounts a 12-year-
old's shopping expedition
for a winter coat during
which the child's mother
conducts a running com-
mentary on the cut, fabric
and manufacturer of each
coat to her disinterested
child. In another incident,
"Linda Lovelabel," a high
school student, received as
a gag gift a box of clothing
manufacturers' labels —
her mother taught her
well.

Following the clothing
training, orthodontia, "nose
job," wardrobe investment,
hair styling and make-up,
the Jewish princess is ready
to trap a husband, helped
along by a "nudgy" mother
who acts as her agent. That
mission alone makes for
enjoyable reading.
After the Jewish prin-
cess's engagement is an-
nounced in every newspaper
within a 100 mile radius of
the girl's hometown, plans
are begun for The Wedding.
Not a small house wedding
like our parents had on 12th
St. or Dexter — it is the Af-
fair of the Century, with,
you guessed it, everything.
Following the marriage the
princess's home is interior
decorated and coordinated
down to the candy in the
Waterford crystal candy
dishes.
However, there are Jew-
ish daughters who don't fit
the stereotyped princess
mold. For example, when
Rabbi Sally Priesand was
asked if she chose to attend
classes at a rabbinical semi-
nary to trap a rabbi, she
replied, "I'm going to be-
come one." Rep. Elizabeth
Holtzman (D.-N.Y.) pro-
vides for another example.
According to Ms. Tonner,
Rep. Holtzman "seems not
to care much about clothes,
hair, make-up, chic, or Jew-
ish Princesses. She is di-
rected, beamed in, and fo-
cused on her responsibilities
to her constituents, her peer
group, her political beliefs,
and her sense of honor."
A light and lively book
filled with amusing details
of the development of the
phenomenon known as the
Jewish American Princess,
"Nothing But the Best," is a
delight.
