officials of the Foreign Min-
istry and the Red Cross
failed.
Although Brazil has de-
clared its backing for the
"Palestinian cause," it has
refused so far to recognize
the PLO as the representa-
tive of the Palestinian peo-
ple.
Brazil's only contact with
the PLO has been confined
to the UN where the PLO
has been accepted with non-
governmental status.

Petition Campaign Started
in Support of Ethiopian Jews

IRVINE, Calif. — Prof.
Howard Lenhoff of the Uni-
versity of California at Ir-
vine, who is vice president of
the American Association
for Ethiopian Jews, has or-
ganized a nation-wide stu-
dent movement and petition
drive to enlist support for
black Ethiopian Jews (Fa-
lashas).
Last month Israel offi-
cially granted the Falashas
automatic citizenship under
Israel's Law of Return.
Their status had been in
question for years, but a
committee ruled that the
25,000 Falashas are descen-
dents of the Tribe of Dan.

Dr. Lenhoff's campaign
has a goal of 50,000 signa-

German-Israeli to Open

Parole for Sirhan Protested

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
State Treasurer Jesse Un-
ruh protested a decision
by the Adult Authority here
to parole convicted assassin
Sirhan B. Sirhan in 1986
and recommended that two
members of the authority
resign. The Adult Authority
is an independent, quasi-
judical agency of the execu-
tive branch of government.
Unruh, who stood with
Senator Robert F. Kennedy
the night he was assassi-
nated blasted the board's
decision to treat Sirhan as
an ordinary inmate as giv-
ing him the Feb. 23, 1968

It was reported last week
that Abyssinian authorities
refused to permit the first

The Falashas believe their
descendents left Jerusalem
for Ethiopia with Menelik,
the son of Solomon and
Sheba. Others say they
came from conversions by
Jews captured in Ethiopia
by King Caleb.
The Falashas settled near
rivers in order to continue
ritual bathing, and do not
allow non-Jews into their
dwellings. The new moon is
the first day of their calen-
dar, a lamb is sacrificed on
Passover, and circumscision
and redemption of the first
born is strictly obvserved.
However, the holidays of
Hanuka and Purim are un-
known to them.

Following the Christian
crusades and down to the
present time, the Falashas
have had a long history of
persecution.

Prof. Lenhoff's students
hope to collect 50,000 signa-
tures by Rosh Hashana in
support of the Falashas.

ver acted under a new
Brown administration pol-
icy which establishes spe-
cific parole dates for Cali-
fornia convicts who now
serve an "indeterminate"
sentence.
Jewish Tombstones
NEW YORK, (JTA) —
Twelve to 15 Jewish tomb-
stones were defaced Mon-'
day in a Brooklyn cemetery.
The markers were spray-
painted with graffiti, ac-
cording to Henry Benisch,
superintendent of Mt. Hope
Cemetery.
A police spokesman said
five youngsters, between the
ages of 12-14, were arrested
and charged with criminal
mischief.

2 Aliya Groups

The Shuva Aliya move-
ment, organized by the Jew-
ish Defense League, is form-
ing two aliya groups.

Garin A, for married cou-
ples, plans to set up a self-
contained community for at
least 50 couples who will
emigrate as a group. The
project will be in the Galilee
town of Hatzor.

Garin B, for either singles
or young married couples,
will establish a new settle-
ment either in the southern
Golan Heights or the Gali-
lee.
