National UJA. Leaders Join
NY Mobilization Drive

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
total of 80 leaders of the
national United Jewish Ap-
peal who came from the
Eastern states to help the
Greater New York UJA-
Federation of Jewish Phi-
lanthropies Joint Total Mo-
bilization Campaign.
The 80 UJA leaders from
out-of-town were joined
Monday by about 350 New
Yorkers in the two-and-a-
half-day phone campaign at
the New York Sheraton
Hotel. This fol-
lowed a "Survival Sunday"
which included door-to-door
solicitations throughout
New York City, Westchester
County and Long Island and
a five-and-a-half hour tele-
thon Sunday night.
The national UJA leaders
participated in the tele-
phone solicitation for the
entire period which ended
Wednesday.
William M. Landau,
who is co-host for the
event, said 9,000 persons
were solicited for pledges
of $1,000 or more. Landau,
who is also president of the
Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, said that many
prospects may be con-
vinced to donate by the
idea that someone thought
the need is important
enough to come from far
away to solicit him or her
personally.
Ninety-three "survival
centers" were strategically
located in synagogues and
communal institutions
throughout New York City,
Westchester and Long Is-
land for the campaign.

Frank R. Lautenberg,
UJA general chairman, said
this marks the greatest
cooperative effort in history
between the national UJA
leadership and the NYC
campaign.
"The Total Mobilization of
American Jewry means that
every man and woman must
understand not only what
the current needs are in Is-
rael but also what are the
consequences of our failure
to provide for these needs.
The solicitors involved in
this joint effort represent
the most sophisticated and
knowledgeable men and

women involved in the work
of the UJA, and they are
prepared to answer the
most complex questions
dealing with the humanitar-
ian situation in Israel to-
day," he said.

agreements were reached

nation" even though Israel,
who also requested arms
prior to the reassessment,
was refused.

He continued, "I do not
feel that the right way to
pursue the goal of a just
peace in the Middle East is
to force Israel into accepting
Arab demands by under-
mining her defense system."
