Present were Rabbis Ashinsky, Osishkin, Eisenman, Thumim, Strauss, Fischer, Za- ger, Horowitz, Fein, and Stollman. Decisions made: 1) Organize to strengthen quality of Jewish life and observance in the community. 2) Creation of Federation of Synagogues to form VAAD Ho'Eer. 3) Decision that participating Rabbis will not issue individual certification of Kash- rut — all certifications will come from a central committee of the VAAD. In 1938, Rabbi Leizer Levin arrived in Detroit and began to play an active role in the Council which eventually led to his becoming the President and "Av Bes Din of the Council". The expanded activity of the Vaad Harabonim necessitated its moving from a one desk operation on Linwood to the eventual purchase of its own headquarters. At the helm of its operations came Rabbi Chaskel Grubner who had been with the Council since 1950 as Executive Director. Through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Roten- berg and the Karbal, Safran and Pollack families, the first building was acquired on Seven Mile Road in 1963. Within ten years, the population shift necessitated a change to the present office located at 17071 W. 10 Mile Road in Southfield, Michigan. The Council of Orthodox Rabbis, enjoys the supoort of all segments of our commu- nity. Its membership reflects a unity of European and American trained Orthodox Rabbis, all working for the same goals originally set forty-five years ago. The ex- panded services of the VAAD now include: KASHRUTH: The Vaad Harabonim renders reliable and uniform Kash- ruth supervision over all establishments that cater to the needs of the Jewish populatioh, such as Kosher meat markets, slaughterhouses, caterers and bak- eries.
