Was shot and died instantly
as his vehicle careened into
a ditch. The terrorists set
fire to the truck._
Police said the Friedman
murder differed from simi=
lar incidents in the past in
several important respects
which indicated that the
terrorists were better or-
ganized and bolder.
According to the police,
the murderers apparently
had Friedman's truck un-
der surveilance for several
days, noting its time table
and route before they
struck, whereas in pre-
vious incidents the terror-
ists would shoot -and run.
Last night_ they tarried at
the scene long enough to
set fire to the truck. Fried-
man, who was badly
burned, was identified- by
doCuments on his body.
Police said the attack was
apparently intended to
frighten Arabs from taking
jobs in Israel. But it also
could be the beginning of ac-
celerated terrorist activities
on the West Bank and else-
where on the occasion of the
27th anniversary of Israel's
independence May 1.5, the
authorities said.
In Jerusalem, Yaacob
Beja, a 37-year-old father of
three, died Monday at
Shaare Zedek Hospital of
burns he suffered when ter-
rorist bombs exploded Sun-
day in the stairwell of his
apartment building on He-
bron Road in southwest Je-
rusalem.
Beja was leaving. for work
at 7 a.m. when he spotted
suspicious looking cannis-
ters in the stairwell and was
about to return to his flat to
call the police when they ex-
ploded. He was a partner in
a book-binding business a
few minutes walk from his_
home. Ile immigrated to
Israel from Egypt in 1948.
Another victim of the ex-
plosion, Mrs. G eula
Zartzi, 28, remained in the
hospital for treatment of
less serious burns. Police
meanwhile are holding 30
suspects out of 100 Arabs
who were detained for
questioning in the vicinity
of the explosion. Security
forces are also searching
for the perpetrators in
East Jerusalem and on the
West Bank.
This terrorist assault
came a little more than 24
hours after terrorists fired
two Katyusha rocket shells
into West Jerusalem early
Saturday. At about 4 a.m.
local time, one shell burst in
the vicinity of the Hebrew
University shattering win-
dows in a nearby apartment
building and uprooting a
telephone cable. No injuries
were reported.
